Python vs the R Programming language - who is winning?

Long story short, Python is eating R! As expected, R is loosing ground to Python because Python is more generalized and people seem to prefer writing Python code over R code.

From the article:
R vs Python: R's out of top 20 programming languages despite boom in statistical jobs

Is R usage among developers declining because of Python?

There is a R Data Scientist course ad right before the video

R is open...I have used both...but dunno why I like R more

syntax wise I like R more than python. Syntax is more functional, easy, less code than python. It looks familiar for Mathematician, Statistician, Economist, Physicist, Biologist….etc. AI & Machine learning eating software world that's why now Computer science student enter this field. In Computer science python is taught. Tha's real reason.

R is mainly for statistics. As a Data Scientist I feel like its important to know both languages. It's like comparing MATLAB with C++...

SQL, VBA, and one of Python/R is the trinity in finance right now. (also MATLAB for quant/FE types) I prefer Python, but R has its strengths as well, and it's definitely worth learning both.

2022 R is out there, dplyr and DBI do in 2-3 lines what pandas do with 80 lines.

Know a little Python, just had a look at R.
Looks pretty slick.
Python is more General purpose than R,
Like someone commented, it's like comparing Matlab to C++

Or as Groucho Marx would say
If you stew apples and bananas together
they taste more like strawberries than apricots do.

I'm a pythonista diving into R and boy do I love R more for data analysis. It violently disagree that people prefer python over R, most people who say that haven't even tried R

Sorry Stefan, you got this very wrong. R is open source, which was one of your main arguments ☹️

I hope calling R from Python will get easier and the statistical stuff will just merge over time into Python.

Based on popular demand, it would be great if you could do a video on how one language is 'more open' than another.

I fully agree, I am at university studying statistics, when I look at old exam papers and assignments they were using Mat-lab a lot, then about two or three years ago the uni switched to having a major focus on R. This is really typical for a university, however, I am actually taking a semester off to really focus on Python development as I am frustrated I have to work in R at uni all the time.

My opinion is that Python is the future of data science, not R

Super concise and easy to listen to, thanks. Had to wade through garbage clickbait to get here

Long story short, Python for black box models and R for white box models.

R has got way more packages (more than 14k) which means more options for data analysis

I think this debate is ridiculous. Julia is the best programming language for Data Science.
