In this video, I pass on some of my experience after owning my Cessna 172 for 12 months in Australia.

See the video for all the details.

Cost breakdown for those AvGeeks:

- Purchase price rage AUD $25k - $50k

Annual costs (94hrs):

- Insurance $2500
- Self-maintenance (25, 50, 75hrly) oil, filters and other approx = $2700
- Storage $1200
- Cleaning products $300
- Landing fees approx = $420
- Expected 100hrly/annual = $3000

Total for 2022 = $11120

I might do a video after the annual and explain the actual costs of operation in more detail so stay tuned.

As an Aussie myself and a rookie with only 15 hours, your videos make me so excited for what’s to come in my flying journey!

Hey champ, the 2 venturi tubes on the side provide vacuum to power your DG & AH. Also early c172's were powered by continental O- 300, meaning they were carburated not Injected.

Broo!!! Just the right video at the right time! Exactly what I'm looking, I'm from SA too!

Good move … I did the same with a 182 and just finished the engine rebuild… a few dollars there… you know when you put it away in the hangar at the end of the day and come back a few days later it will be in the same condition and nothing broken.

Grew up with a c172 as a kid living in Wst Qld. We flew from Djarra to Mount Isa in it sometimes. Nice to reminisce. Thanks

Bruh, you know owning a plane itself is soo cool already. Honestly, when we see it, we will already get amazed at the fact you have one. I don't think we will care too much about the look.

It's no DA62 but still a mighty fine little machine. Good pickup.

Hay mate, thanks for making the video, I was looking at buying a C172 myself, I've actually found one (SA based also) not sure I could afford the $11k a year to keep it flying and serviceable.

Love it! Great little plane. Love the '60's vibe - built to last with some TLC. Do you plan to upgrade avionics at some stage?

Great video, thanks for the detailed walk around.
Those stall horns look a lot like vacc generators...lol

IO300 6 cylinder may produce less power than 4 cylinder but a lot less vibration that wears every thing out, gyros, flap tracks,
pilot, smoother the better just my opinion for what its worth

Hey Mate! Been watching your videos a fair bit super interesting. Thanks for putting them out there.
How’s everything been the past year or so since passing your CPL and buying the Cessna?! Are you working in industry at all?

Hey dude not seen you in a while. May not be the prettiest but as long as it does the job hey. Engine overhaul will probably be costly when the time comes. Thanks mate

Thanks for sharing. What do you think of the paint color? Getting mine painted soon, thought of yellow for high visibility

Oliver, congrats on having your own machine. Are you still living in QLD and basing the 172 in SA?
I'm in Sydney but often in SA, have my own machine too and if you'd be keen on doing some travel let's chat.

Nice like everything in aviation it’s not a free lunch the 50 you saved on buying a cheap plane will be used on a new engine and paint.
