How Long Will a Car Battery (12v) Power a TV?

Though not designed for deep-cycle applications without the car's engine running, a typical 600 watt-hour car starting battery should be able to power a portable DC 1.5-amp TV/DVD player for about 16 hours or a 32" LED TV (30-watts) for about 7.5 hours and still be able to start the car's engine.

This guy just gave everybody a math lesson we didn’t come here to get just plug the fucking thing up and let it run until the battery dies and there’s your fucking answer folks

Career Electrical Engineer here. Everything in this video is 100% on point: the calculations, considerations, inverter interference, inverter losses, battery designs, television loads, and alternatives to using a car battery. The delivery in this video is impeccable. The poster is obviously very knowledgeable on theoretic and real-world conditions. Hats off to you, and thank you for posting 👍🏻

Well.. it’s good to have this man as a dad. Doing all the homework.

600WH / 35W = ~17hrs. You're welcome.

LOVE THE MATH. So simple and so clear. YES, in my case, running my TV off battery is far more efficient than electric. I live on a remote island in southeast Asia and the grid goes down OFTEN. Solar backed with grid makes a super simple but stable system. Thank you

Thank you. You are the first person to use a walmart battery. I use walmart batteries and they work ok. And you explained cca. Good video

Watching this after hurricane ian knocked out power at my house a few days ago.. hearing the loud annoying generators for 20 hours was enough for me to look at alternatives. This would easy power s few fans and charge some phones during a power outage

Not all apartments have accessible balconies to run a gas powered Inverter generator...some people may take ur advise as to use the Gen inside apt; thus possibly poisoning themselves with Carbon Monoxide...

so will a UPS/Surge protector protect your sensitive electronics? from the uneven voltages if you have to run an old fashioned NON inverter generator?

I'm curious, some tv's come with power adapters that take the voltage down to 12v ?a. How long would the car battery last if the inverter was eliminated.

SIR I LIVE IN THE BACK OF A BOX TRUCK, I GOT TIRED OF PAYING RENT, NOW I PAY NO RENT NOWHERE, AND IVE GOT 12 CAR BATTERIES I BOUGHT FOR $15.00 A PIECE IM JUST GOING TO DAISY CHAIN ALL 12 BATTERIES PLUS TO PLUS AND NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE, AND WHEN THEY STOP WORKING ILL JUST THROW THEM OUT THE BACK OF MY BOX TRUCK TOWARD THE CURB, ? HOW LONG WILL ALL 12 BATTERIES LAST ? P.S. IF YOU SEE A CAR BATTERY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IT WAS MINE OK THANKYOU! OWENS.

Yay! Thank you for making this video! I love the detailed breakdown and explanation!
Much appreciated!

I just found your channel so you may have videos that show running an instant, airfryer, toaster oven etc. Anywho.. that would be super interesting

I am looking at walking the neighborhood a few hours / day with a vendor cart and I need mobile AC power where setting up a generator is just not feasible while walking and pushing a cart. I know the power requirements of my equipment (about 50 watts total, continuous). This video was very helpful knowing I can do it -- apparently better with a marine battery. If this doesn't sound correct, please advise.

You lost me at the math my friend. I understand why you did the problem. So, at the end are you getting more with the generator or battery per CCAs? So should I buy the battery and sine inverter or the gas generator? Still not sure.

I need to run a 1800 w hotplate....what will it take? Two batteries?

Thanks for the video demo but if I have let's say a deep cycle gel battery is it also ok to use it on small appliances like a tv rated at 35w or a fan rated at 18w , can I also make the battery as a powerbank and does it have the same storage life as car batteries? Is it ok to just leave it unused for a month and just use it when the power is out? Thanks

Love your video! I've got son & daughter's old car batteries I've swapped out for them lying around charging up. Both are around 43ah 50ah. I'm going to be using them for LED lights around the tents when camping this summer and also charge our phones up. I'll be connecing a USB adapter for that which are 12v input and whatever (5v) USB. Everyone is have even got a small 5w solar panel. Have you got any advice on safety like fuses? I will watch and nurse the system and disconnect everything before we go to bed but should I use a fuse box and would a 10amp fuse do the job?

So I have a group 34 Optima Red AGM battery which means I should be fine with using my back up battery then? I mean from my rudimentary understanding of how various batteries work an AGM is a deep cycle battery but not a marine battery due to not technically being rated for possibly being submerged or getting splashed? I mean it is a no spill battery so I'm guessing it's waterproof to like maybe a meter.

How about if you plugin a mains car battery charger to a generator, then connect the charger to the battery while the invertor is running off the battery, so you are converting a non invertor generator into an invertor generator so you can safely run electronics like computers in a blackout. Would the battery charger keep the battery topped up like running a car engine with the invertor connected?

I'm going full solar ( i'm tired of spending money on electricity ) and i was wondering if this were the bateries that i needed to use on the sistem to use on night time, i guess they aren't, thanks very informative video
