The Ultimate Guide to IV Fluid Types

Back in the day, I struggled to understand IV fluids so I mixed them at home! That was the best thing to do! I learned so much about IV fluid basics, including tonicity, osmolality, and free water content, that most think they know.

In this video, I am repeating that and remixing IV fluids, I will be mixing saline solutions (0.9 NS, 0.45 NS, 0.225 NS), plasmalyte, lactated ringer (LR), and dextrose solutions (5% dextrose, 10% dextrose, and 50% dextrose), and sodium bicarb solutions.

We will discuss the concentration and tonicity of each solution type and which is considered hypotonic, Isotonic, or Hypertonic.

And will conclude by discussing the relationship between the free water content and osmolality and where each solution falls in this category.
