IMPORTANT: You MUST disable Godrays to achieve the same look as this video. Godrays will washout all the detail and HDR-like visuals. I'm not using the textures that come Project Mojave so results may vary. Cinema II and Gentle Boost I in the NAC preset settings in these videos.
Results may vary. You might have to adjust your monitor. I tuned the visuals on a calibrated Samsung Odyssey G7 with local dimming and super dynamic contrast on. I checked it on a histogram and there is a little clipping in the blacks, but otherwise it’s balanced.
Didn’t test night time or interiors, so tweaking might still be needed.

I want to make somethings clear, game engines have 5 main components: Game Logic, Graphics Renderer, Audio Engine, Physics, and AI.
Havok engine(acquired by Microsoft in 2015) is the physics for Fallout 4, the rest are the proprietary Creation engine made by Bethesda Game Studios, a subdivision of Bethesda Softworks (Acquired by Microsoft in 2021 as apart of ZeniMax, the parent company of at least 7 other game companies including Bethesda Softworks).

Josh Sawyer, project director and lead designer for Fallout: NV, had this to say about Creation Engine on his Twitter in December 2020:
"Time constraints were the biggest one. 18 months to make a game the size of F:NV was stressful and difficult. I don't really think console limitations were a big deal, but our lack of familiarity with the engine made it difficult for us to optimize."
"Thankfully, Bethesda internal dev did help us with some optimization later on. The toolset/pipelines for Bethesda's engine are fast, the fastest I've used, honestly. There is no other engine I can think of that would have allowed us to make that much content that quickly."

"Two of the biggest hurdles were technical landmines that appeared relatively late in development. First, Havok Physics needed to be upgraded several versions because the version used in F3 would not compile with date-compliant Sony SDKs. Our programming team was very small."

From J Saywer, GDC Europe 2016:
"That's one of the things Bethesda's toolset makes very easy. It's super easy to make areas, super easy to modify, super easy to track assets, and it's pretty darn powerful. Look at this way: there's no way in hell that our team could have made Fallout New Vegas without that tool. It was just impossible. And if you look at the mods, it's astounding what people can do with it. I personally think that is very cool."

There is thing in the software industry called "Technical debt" (also known as tech debt or code debt). It describes what results when development teams take actions to expedite the delivery of a piece of functionality or a project which later needs to be refactored. In other words, it's the result of prioritizing speedy delivery over perfect code.

This is the reason games ship with bugs. Developers are not lazy, in fact, they are the opposite of lazy. They are working overtime, months on end, sometimes over 100 hours per week per person to meet the release date which is nearly always an impossible task to do, only for people online to call them "Lazy". Just read about the RDR2 dev burnout, this is happens in every software company.

Just look up a tutorial about memory management in C++ and you will see a sliver all the complexities that goes into making a software application let alone a video game.

I have huge respect for all the developers that work on these games. Creation Engine has proven to be one of the best engines for modding as evidence by all the amazing Elderscrolls and Fallout mods out there. Modders are not under the same pressure as game studio devs. Modders don't have to worry about being fired if they don't finish their job. They can work at their own pace, take breaks whenever they want, and can make all the creative decisions they want instead of having decisions be vote by committee.

I think my favorite part is that I'm so used to the Creation Engine being the Creation Engine that it took me a full second to realize that the exploding molerat pirouetting away into the sunset was not, in fact, normal behavior. Todd Howard has broken my spirit, and I can never be free.

As buggy as it is, the Fallout 4 engine must be one of the most underrated pieces of tech ever. They physics are nuts, especially when it's about sound environment. I fired a shell near Oberland Station. The bullet casing hit the railway track. I came. The sound it made was beyond impressive.

My first time playing Project Mojave I had the seasons mod installed.
Needless to say the Mojave was a green and verdant place about 100ish feet away from you.

That's why I never trust pretty screenshots. No matter how gorgeous it looks modded, F4 is still terrible to play because of dumb AI, bugs and primitive animations.
