Balanced Homemade Dog Food Recipe

The term "balanced" is used by veterinarians, canine nutritionists, pet food companies and other experts in the field to refer to a diet that is nutritionally balanced and can be used as a dog's sole diet.

The next time you're in the pet store, check out the label of the dog foods that are labeled "balanced." They specifically state the type of dog that the food is formulated for. For example, food for puppies, senior dogs, dogs in all life stages, overweight dogs, dogs with special health conditions...the list goes on and on.

Please do not take this in any kind of attacking way. It took me almost a year to finally understand dog nutrition and get it right.

Personally, I do the raw feeding BARF diet, and I am more than sure that I still make mistakes. This is in no way to criticize, but I feel it’s a very important points to bring up for other people reading this.

Unless you are supplementing with eggshell or maybe doubling the bone for the next dinner the same day, there’s no calcium or even a supplement? It’s just misleading for people because dogs need calcium with every single needle or their body will start taking it from their own bone mass. If you don’t want to feed raw, in place of bones there should be either a crushed eggshells for calcium or some type of calcium powder, pill supplement. I am unsure what that word to say this is nutritionally balanced without calcium, but I would ask on your next visit that why isn’t there a calcium source in it. If you research it yourself you’ll see that I’m telling the truth here. That could really harm them and like I said their bodies will start taking the calcium from their own bones which is not good. The only other thing that I noticed was missing was Oregon made. For a completely balanced diet, whether you’re feeding raw or cooked, it should be 5% of the total weight of the meal as a liver, which you have, and another 5% should be an organ meat such as spleen, kidney, and many others to choose from. They should also have muscle meets in there such as heart, tongue, gizzards, whatever you want to feed.

I truly Don’t mean this in a critical way, because you have so many good things in there, but the calcium, organ, and muscle meet is missing.

Again, I would sooner feed my dog this than dry kibble, But I made so many steaks myself the first year of feeding the human food and I just hate to see others do the same. There’s a lot of information on Google about the BARF diet and like I said if you don’t want to go raw you could just cook everything except the bone they can’t have cooked up on it has to be raw or they can choke, but it is so important to supplement with either crushed egg shells or some type of calcium powder if you are not feeding raw and giving them bone with every meal. Crushed eggshells are so easy to make. But again you’d want to ask your vet as to how much you should put in for meals without any calcium. I’ve made so many mistakes, and I just like to try to let other people know when I see them doing the same things I used to do ❤️ Namaste

PS: Rodney Habib is a dog nutritionist and an amazing resource. He’s all over YouTube. He doesn’t force raw, and he gives so much scientifically-based information. Rodney even shows the scientific paperwork to back up what he saying. I don’t think I could ever get as much information that I’ve learned about raw feeding and balanced feeding from Rodney if I bought a 1000 page book. He is just a wealth of information.

Cooked eggs? Crushed egg shells for added calcium? Sardines? Organic chicken bone broth? Broccoli? Diced sweet potatoes?

Can you measure out 2 cups with a measuring cup? Isn't that for liquids only?

What do you do or suggest for some of the missing nutrients such as calcium, fat soluble vitamins, and trace minerals?

I never considered using the slow cooker this is great! I have a senior Boxer girl who is overweight. And I have a 2 yr old Chiweenie who is active and even a little ribby. Not sure why because he eats well. However he is always running around hyper. I want to do this to cook them separate diets. Oh, and not that it matters really, but apple seeds actually have low levels of cyanide in them, not arsenic. Either way, not good for anyone. lol Thank you for making these videos. I will be starting this over the weekend.

Why does it matter if the meat is cooked? Dogs do extremely well on raw diets.
