Check out this video on why I NEVER wanted to become an ER nurse. I like nothing about it while I was in Nursing School...
Also find out why I am currently working in the ER even though I hated it previously!

Im glad you are enjoying yourself! My favorite part of ER nursing is the freedom. Ordering your own labs, xrays, ekgs, pain meds (of course you will need to have these protocols memorized to do so) but it motivates me to continue reading and learning. I highly suggest Tintinallis emergency medicine textbook. The newer versions are more nurse friendly and easy to follow. In my opinion, nursing textbooks try too hard to dumb things down as if we cant understand complex pathophysiology. Its expensive but if you make a habit to read it, it will help you anticipate orders, treatment, and improve your focused assessments. It basically helps keep me from falling behind when the ED is rocking.

My first day in ED clinical, I was soon presented with an opportunity to do a Foley. I was nervous and stumbling, but then a nurse said, "don't worry, it just needs to be ER sterile". That casual vibe makes ED so enjoyable!

I said I never wanted to do ED nursing either. I thought it was too fast paced and would be too much for me to handle with all the gory stuff that can come in. Well, I started off as a BURN ICU nurse and I got sick of that quickly. It was the same patient with the extensive wound care routines twice every shift. I should have known it wouldn't be good for me. I get bored very easily. ED nursing for the last two years is definitely a perfect fit for me.

My first job out of nursing school was in the ER. I figured out very quickly that it was not a good fit for me. I put in my 2 weeks notice right at the of my orientation. I work in a dialysis clinic now and I am liking it a lot better!

During nursing school I was a trauma tech at a high acuity level 2 trauma center. When i graduated I thought for sure i would go straight into the ED but i ended up as a new grad in the cath lab and seriously i could never go back to the ED. Cath lab nursing is the best kept secret in nursing omg seriously can't get enough of it! I just found your channel and love your energy! New sub! Haha

I was an ER tech for the 2 years I was in nursing school, then transitioned to being an ER nurse in a level 2 trauma center. There are the ER nurses who don't care about connections with patients, but I have found I have better connections with my patients in the ER than the patients I had during my preceptorship on a neuro tele floor. Currently 5 years in the ER, and I love it.

I just turned in my resignation on the Med Surg floor this past Wednesday. I got a job lined up in the ER. I just finished periop 101 bc OR is my dream job but they hired travel nurses instead of us employees doing the mentorship 🙄 anyways. So my friend told me about the ER job and I have a good feeling about the manager. Little nervous I’m going to be a dear in headlights and be teased at first for not being perfect. Plus I have to take PALS/ACLS before I can cross train so I’m going to be a Covid screener to start (with nurse pay😜).

I’m graduating nursing school in May and have accepted a job in the ED!! I am terrified, but also so ready to begin my career! It’s so funny because I also said I would never start in ED and now I’m so excited to start there!!! Thank you so much for this video, I really needed this!!!

I have been a nurse for 14 years; working mainly as a surgical circulating nurse. I have been mulling over the idea of ED nursing for about 2 years. But since I have never done med-surg or any kind of nursing where there are intense assessments involved, I am worried that I don't have the knowledge needed to work in the emergency room. It is understandably expected that a nurse with 14 years of experience should know how to do a very thorough assessment such as is needed in the ED, and I know it sounds silly but we really just interview our patients and take them back. Somebody else does the assessment before we get there. I also worry about working around nurses with such high skill level. OR nursing is awesome, but the environment I worked in was very controlled and we rarely had an emergency. I'm just not sure I have the knowledge to keep up with such highly skilled ED nurses and doctors. I tend to be a very high energy individual who borders on ADHD. I have an upbeat personality, but I get nervous in situations where I'm not familiar. The OR has been familiar to me for a long time. I am open to suggestions thoughts or advice. Great channel, just discovered it today.

When you first started working in the ER did you feel unprepared? Were you ever anxious about what situations you might encounter while on your shift?
