Today, I learned about Harvey E. Brown, a civil war surgeon who had performed so many amputations he ran out of fake legs and had to use a shovel.
It was a ground-breaking medical procedure.

Getting to Virginia from New Mexico was no small project in itself.

Sibley's retreat is shown in the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I had to do a double take when you said this guy’s name. Henry HASTINGS Sibley was the first governor of Minnesota and went on to serve as general in the Union Army. It seems weird that there were two Generals Henry H. Sibley fighting on opposite sides in the Civil War.

Being a drunk must of been a qualification for being a officer in the 1860s💀

The transcontinental RR was complete 5 or 6 years after the war ended. So great distances and the continental divide would pretty much foil most forms of aggression during the civil war.

i grew up near the "western most civil war battle site" stanwix station, az (not much to see there) ... but a lot happened out there... it's kinda close to where the oatman massacre happened and also where the last of the vasquez banditos was taken into custody, clodoveo chavez ... vasquez was pretty famous and i consider him the real life zorro and the famous vasquez rocks park, ca is named for him as that was where his hideout was (star trek also used that park for all their outdoor scenes) and a few miles away from stanwix station is where henry crabb started his ill fated filibuster expedition into mexico which ended with the crabb massacre in mexico and yuma is real close to filibuster camp (the northern end of the "camino del diablo") and yuma was the place with the glanton gang were massacred which kicked off the yuma war and ended with the quechen massacring the cocopah ... so you got 3 or 4 massacres and 2 wars fought within 25 years and within an area of 75 miles ... but there's nothing to see but a lot of desert (well, sometimes there's a ufo or two)

Another interesting fact about Sibley:

He designed a unique tent for the Army to use, which was commonly used by the Union to house a large number of troops.

Competent officer with bold ambitions that went up in smoke at Glorietta Pass.

Even further West was the Confederate Arizona Territory. There was one skirmish as the Union troops came from the North and the Confederates came from the South and met at Picacho Peak.

Sibley was a mention character in “the good the bad and the ugly“. Never seen in the movie, his name was mentioned at least once.

He also invented the Sibley cavalry tent. Looks similar to a teepee so very little affect from wind. Instead of lodgepoles it had one pole in the center.
You laid it out, staked down the bottom, the stick the pole in the door and walk the tent up. Even had a Sibley stove if needed. Usually 9 men slept in it. Very practical tent for western campaigns on the windswept prairies.

The furthest west skirmish/battle of the war was at Picacho Pass, in the shadow of Picacho Peak in ARIZONA. It is right beside Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix.

General Sibley's Army of New Mexico had it's own unique battle flag, a single white star on a red background, like in the Battle of Glorietta Pass painting shown in the video. It stood in contrast to the Bonnie Blue Flag, widely popular among Confederates in the east.

They would be lucky to complete that march by the time the war ended.

Heh. The color of that map is fairly apt, since the country was going through a period of transition…
