This story would make an excellent movie, of longing for freedom, courage and daring to achieve it.

This story is the very tip of the iceberg, this dude was AMAZING. After the war he bought his old plantation and one day an old women, clearly demanded, wandered up to his house claiming it was hers. Turns out she was the wife of the former plantation (and slave) owner. He saw to her care until she passed.

And the US Navy has now re-naned the former USS Chancellorsville in his honor. The change was officially announced a little over 18 months ago.

First African American Captain in the US Navy.

In 2023 a Ticonderoga class cruiser was renamed the USS Robert Smalls to remove references to the Confedracy from military ships and installations.

The rest of the story is even more impressive. Why hasn't Hollywood made a movie about this?

I learned about Robert Smalls from Drunk History!

The show does a great job discussing lesser known events and people, particularly women and non-white humans. And it's funny, to me at least. But I think it deserves commendation for its choice of coverage, and bringing history to a wider, drunker audience.

Every day, I go down to the harbor and throw fish to a baby dolphin. My friends say it's a waste of time.
But at least I'm serving a youthful porpoise.
