I've destroyed more an my fair share of ball diffs learning to get them broke and in set properly. This video shares my opinion on why i never over tighten a ball diff any more.

Ball diffs were the enemy when I first started. If you have no one to show you what it's supposed to feel like it's big time trial and error.

I do this with my ball diff. I actually just rebuilt mine today because I got abused b5m, threw in my Team Orion vortex r10 pro and my Orion 5.5t sensored motor. So it needed it lol. Great video Jason. 👍

I've had groves in my diff rings pretty close to what you showed in this video. And the crazy thing is that it worked beautifully. I could come into the corners a little hot and not have to worry about my diff unloading, and now that I have replaced the rings and the ball's, now no more overdriving it into the corners... I'm going too have to add the gear diff now. Or kill another set of ball's & rings, to get the same consistency.

I'd like to see someone make a diff ring with a grooved channel sort of like your drawing or like the caged thrust bearing washers. Seem like that would give more contact patch to the diff ball and it would slip less and have a wider range of adjustment

Excellent video Jason exactly on point!

So far my only stumped/why of my b6.1 build. Really didnt think all the way tight then off 1/8 turn seemed right. I will adjust after build and more research on breaking in.

Tighter is safer. Small adjustments is the key. Takes lots of run time to make the grove expand.

Is another way to say this as such?: When you slowly tighten up a ball diff, the balls fall in to the ring in a more uniform/symmetrical fashion, but when you loosen the balls you might get asymmetry?

I'm just trying to work it out in my head and it would seem that the angle in which you're holding the diff/car at while tightening/loosening would have the most impact.

Nice vid Jason so what pretty much don't over tighten run the diff then loosen it. Oh nice to see the Ending down from 30 sec to 10 sec

well i run my diffs a loose as possible anyways (using a lock clutch to set it so i can hear for diff slip). keep in mind each surface you run on will change how loose you can run it. <<< this make the car easy to drive.

would it be a good idea to turn both rings around to a fresh side after a wile of driving?

hey jason, great video I have a question regarding my next rc, I currently run a tlr 22 sct 1.0 that is just hammered and falling apart, should I wait for a tlr 22 sct 3.0 or get a sc5m like everyone at my track has, I secretly have an admiration for the tlr trucks though?

If it starts to feel a little off regardless of your tension, clean the balls, fresh lube and flip the plates over

+ShortCourseWorld hi Jason I'm running a B5m factory lite and I love the car although I don't get much turn out of it, even at very slow speeds. is it possible that I have my diff to tight and it's creating resistance between the two wheel speeds and not allowing the outside wheel to turn as fast as it should. I have a savox 1258-tg servo so it's not my servo that's the issue.

This video leaves absolutely zero clue as to what too tight, too loose and anything else actually means…
