"Want help making your next map? Don't. Just use one that already exists." Solid advice, will always work.

Back in the 3.5 days, I ran a "Zombie Night at the Morgrave Aquarium" adventure for my Eberron game and used the map for the Georgia Aquarium as the basis for its exhibits. Very helpful advice!

I was literally trying to design a Church to the Gods/Goddess, exactly what I needed for inspiration!

Really helpful advice. Medieval architecture is both functional and beautiful.

I have used a school floor map for a citadel, I just changed the scale. And I've use a map of a university as a "city of the gods" sort of thing. It's fun taking a map and reimagining it.

A lot of my friends always wondered why I have so many books about old castles and towns. I was collecting these since the early 90's, aka pre-Google

following along in this vein I used an existing fantasy game world to make a map for a space based game, used the geography as a basis for faction territory, towns/places of interest, roads as hyperspace lanes, larger cities as the home-world sections of different factions etc, all using your starmap guide, turned out fantastic :)

I used a tourist map of Teotihuacan for a city in my homebrew world. I wanted Mayan/Aztec-y kind of temple city thing.

Great idea, and one that a GM can certainly draw upon to come up with new and interesting maps, building on the work done by others.

Nice bite size tips. I've done this before, about 35 years ago. I think it's a great idea, I don't know why I stopped doing it. Hmm

Ok, so I once made a map, of which I’m proud, of a distillery in a swamp, on an ancient dilapidated and then refurbished and repurposed riverboat, a relic from the long extinct and impossibly more advanced culture that suffered an apocalypse centuries ago… to do this I researched photos of a irl river boat, a dilapidated barge that was a floating McDonalds that went between Canada and the USA… i edited photos to color match, added signs of life and restructure and plopped it down in the middle of a free public fantasy swamp map, then built a map for inside the barge as a separate image, when my players entered the barge, the second map overlaid on top of the irl boat image exactly… my players were too cool to tell me it was cool… but it was effing cool!
