All of our dogs were house broken and we never had crates or pens. Dogs are not meant to be caged up. I think it's inhumane and I don't care what the so called experts say.

My puppy(6 months old) is more or less potty trained but boy! it's been a journey. I haven't used a crate which I guess made it a little more challenging(also that we live in an apartment). I think for us a turning point was that when I caught him on the act I did something he didn't like. I sometimes sprayed a little water on his back or just gave a loud clap. I read it 1000 times that you should just calmly pick them up and take them outside, which I did, but he only started signaling to go out after he learnt that there ARE some consequences if he pees inside(even if that's just a few drops of water) This worked for us quite well.
