The Best Part of James Gunn's DCU

So, James Gunn just announced the lineup for Chapter 1 of the new direction at DC Studios titled "Gods and Monsters." Including a new Superman movie, a Booster Gold show, Supergirl, the Authority, Swamp Thing, and a new Batman movie including Robin.

I loved all of these announcements of more obsure properties, like Creature Commandos, the Authority, Booster Gold, and, my most anticipated movie, Swamp Thing. The greater world of DC is so vast and exciting, and has barely been touched in the movies, so I’m really excited for general audiences to get to know these characters more, in addition to seeing new sides of Batman and Superman. But I'm the most excited for the potential impact that this could have on the comics industry.

With great power, there must also come great responsibility:

As someone who is a massive horror movie fan and having read an obscene amount of Swamp Thing comics in middle school, I absolutely cannot wait to see what they do with the character and his supporting cast like Anton Arcane. Mega hype

What truly amazes me about James Gunn's DCU slate is how much passion and love for the comics James Gunn has the comics and for so many of these characters, to the point that, as you said, countless copies of these comic book source materials got sold out, which is insane. I have a lot of faith in James and Peter Safran's 8-10 year plan as this is DC's last chance to make a comeback for the better and with actual throughout the planning and new direction.
I have a lot of ideas and hopes for what we could see in the long-term future of the DCU such as a Green Lantern film franchise/saga, a Question tv series, a New Gods show/film, a Green Arrow & Black Canary series/film, a Zatanna film, a Teen Titans film etc...

Even though I do have some small concerns and queries such as whether this reboot will be a soft or full reboot, how soon will it be until we hopefully see recast versions of characters like Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, also the aforementioned age gap between Batman and Superman, why to start with Daimian (even though do like Damian), what will it be like to bring in actors for both animation and live-action, etc...?

But all and all I am still hyped to hopefully see a bright future for DC

A animated Teen Titans movie made with care and creativity that understands the potential of animation like Puss N Boots The Last Wish or Spider-Verse would go so unbelievably hard!

John Constantine's first appearance was in The Swamp Thing. So if James used this to introduce my man then it would be the perfect set up for the Justice League Dark.

I would LOVE to see Troy tackle a Green Arrow story. I love both Green Arrow and Troy, so that'll be a match in heaven for me

Something I really hope for is a World’s Finest movie. We need the connection between Batman/Superman to be made before joining the league.

My only real concern has to do with the Batfamily. Tim is my favorite DC character, and skipping to Damian doesn't sound good for him. I'm hoping they don't erase him (as happens too often), but even if he is part of it, the start of his story—his foundation—is part of what makes him such a great character. He's the kind of character who would NEED a prequel, and I'm not confident that would happen. Everything else sounds great though. I would love to see Lanterns pulling from GL/GA. Another character I'd love to see is Etrigan in Swamp Thing.

I am really hoping that they do keep some things separate. Very skeptical of the games carrying over actors and keeping continuity. I feel like having rocksteadys Arkham franchise doing it’s own thing while Nolans Batman/DCEU was coming out and acting as a BTAS spiritual successor was inspired and I hope we don’t lose the charm of the creativity that is inherent from the different mediums adapting the same IP. Give us those movies and give us entirely different games with expressive artstyles, new stories and engaging gameplay 🙏

*I feel like The Green Lantern Series* should be like Serpico or Batman Year One… in the sense that these “Fish out of water” cops are sent to work with a police force on Earth (because the series is set on Earth) to solve an obviously extra-terrestrial crime.. and along the way they realise the police department is corrupt and it’s like this silent game of weeding out the bad cops and who can be trusted 🤷🏾‍♂️

I doubt this new DCU will take over everything because we’re still going to get individual projects that are under the name DC Elseworlds, which is what they should’ve been doing from the beginning. I also like how they’re using names from the comics like Gods and Monsters as well as Elseworlds, two popular titles from DC Comics.

I NEED Plastic Man to get the love and respect he deserves. He can apparently go toe to toe with Superman and is immune to Martian Manhunter’s telepathy. Batman classifies him as one of the most dangerous humans alive

Overall I'm super excited about all of this, BUT I'm very very nervous about The Authority movie. I feel like it would be so easy for it to become just "The Boys but DC" when it's so much more complex than that. The Boys is about corporate greed and capitalism corrupting super-powered people which is great in its own right. But The Authority is about the inherent power and authority that comes with superhuman abilities and their relationship to the state and the conflict between institutional authority versus superhuman authority.

some DC ideas that I would pay all my life savings to see on screen:
-Wally west, as long as they take more inspiration from Young Justice than the Flash tv show .KF's suit in The flash in my opinion is overdesigned, and while I don't mind the change in skin tone, I also don't think the hairstyle worked for the suit

-clayface. One of my favorite rouges in Batman's gallery. specifically Ethan bennet. He is my favorite clayface and It would cause some issues if Damien tried to dismember him, or hurt him a lot as he was once Bruce's friend

- a storyline either involving Jason Todd or Jimmy Olsen. More of Jimmy because I don't remember a good adaptation of Jimmy. He could be like, Superman's healer or something and constantly joke about how Lois loves superman and Clark loves Lois and somehow reveal his Identity to Lex Luthor or anything

-Let some of the experienced hero's rouges be gone. Have Ra's dead or have Cheetah in custody or captain cold avenging his sister like injustice and protecting Central city while Flash is out of town. Have Lobo paid off to not come to earth on bounties. It would be cool to have a world that actually has events and has people that rise and fall. Heck I wouldn't mind If They start with heroes gone and have others gone trying to find them. It would be world building.
