Strange that there is such a big debate over the value of focusing only on a college education when hiring personnel. College was NEVER meant to teach a student everything they need to know to perform any job. A college education is designed to teach people how to learn and equip them with the tools to effectively educate themselves for whatever career they choose.

Been on both sides of interview table in software development over many years, and it has ALWAYS involved demonstrating the writing of code. It just doesn't make any sense not to want to see if a candidate can do the thing they are hired to do. Of course its understandable this can make a candidate nervous so when I have done interviews I spent some time making the candidate feel at ease as best I can and then stated with super simple coding problems before getting to the real ones. Even if they could not do the real work at the level needed I wanted them to feel like they could at least succeed at some things--of course sometimes they could not even do that, but that was rare.

Like his hiring approach, but it eliminates first time job out of college. Software is different than engineering. I can't think of one person that doesn't have a degree which has sufficient knowledge, however; I wouldn't hire half the college educated engineers because they don't have sufficient knowledge. And likely never had the knowledge.
