WHY CAR SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS SULFUR WHEN ACCELERATING
If your car smells like rotten eggs or sulfur when accelerating or when revving up your car in this video we will explain what often causes a car to smell like rotten eggs / sulfur. If your car smells like rotten eggs it is most likely caused by bad gas, dirty catalytic converter or clogged catalytic converter. In some cases it is normal to smell sulfur / rotten eggs if you have driven your car short distance and the catalytic converter did not reach optimal temperature next time you rev your car the catalytic converter will get hot and kind of clean itself. Hopefully the video will be helpful to any of you that need help with finding why car smells like rotten eggs / sulfur.

I just got a 2006 chrysler 300c with the 5.7 hemi.. only 56.000 miles.. I get the rotten egg/sulfer smell when hard accelleration... I was thinking the car had likely not been run hard because an 86 year old woman owned it sense new.. theres no codes, no check engine lights, runs great. also the car sat for abt 6 months because she stopped driving... do u think its old gas?

Could it be coils that are letting unburnt fuel downstream? I have a similar issue, didn't have a problem until I had a misfire code for a bad fuel injector, changed all 8 injectors and now I'm getting a misfire code on the same bank but on a different cylinder and now my exhaust smells like eggs! I'm thinking it might be a coil that's bad....not sure though.

I purchased a used car and it had the rotten egg smell. But after changing to high quality gas and also cleaning out the carbon buildup in my direct injection I never smelled it ever again. So maybe basic maintenance of the car was enough to rid that problem. Haven’t had that smell in 2 years. It’s completely gone.

Hey everyone I think I found out the solution on a forum. Here’s what someone wrote:

Hello everyone, I recently discovered how to fix a 'rotten egg' smell in the cabin on my 2007 Lexus IS250, which was driving me crazy.

I had mentioned it to the Lexus dealership, when the car was in for service, without palmed me off saying that the car was running perfectly and that the smell was a common issue with my model Lexus. Well that's not good enough Lexus !!!

I was hell-bent of finding a solution, read up on various web links that it could be the catalytic converter, etc. etc. guess what, it's not that difficult to fix !

It was purely the case of blocking off a couple of air-vents in the boot of the car, which are badly designed by Lexus, that let exhaust gasses into the cabin. They are poorly designed with a gravity operated plastic flap, that having deteriorated over time, no longer seals the vents to prevent exhaust gasses from being sucked back into the car. See video link here below on how to DIY change/repair this vents at home.
I simply blocked them off with a thin piece of plastic cut-to-size and glued into position.

Now, no more smell, even under heavy motoring !!!

Also search for this vid on YouTube, he showed how to do it:

Damn my car has 21k miles on it and I smell eggs. Battery is 3 yrs old so I'm not sure if it might be that. My gas is from costco; running 91 premium so i don't think it's that. Might just try an additive first to clean the cat and fuel injectors because that's the cheapest. Then do my battery next if it still stinks when I accelerate. ( Sometimes I'm parked and I can smell it while I'm idling)

The throttle body sensor can cause this too. I had a shade tree monkey. clean mine. I'm sure he used brake cleaner and not throttle body cleaner and that will mess up the sensor up . I'm a 30 years as tech for dealers. Let it go to long and you will replace the the cat too.
