MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE FIRST CANTONESE VIDEO before watching this one:

So I'm back with another canto video... I wasn't going to make anymore but then I saw the previous video was so popular, and I still use my canto now after my initial 2 years of self learning (for those of you who watched my first video, I'm unfortunately no longer with my HK girlfriend - but I still like the language :)).

These 10 words are super helpful in helping you build basic sentences and extend any phrases that you pick up from your other learning streams! It also helps to have good pronunciation of these words so that your sentences sound more fluent :)

If it's your first time here, I'm not a native Cantonese speaker and my family has no Cantonese background, but I learned Mandarin for over 10 years and started self-learning Cantonese intensively between 2018-2020. I'm not spending as much time learning it anymore, but I still use canto regularly for things like ordering food, talking to friends from canto-speaking countries and singing 陳奕迅/周柏豪 songs... 🎤

Hope these 10 words help you out and thanks for watching! The apps and resources I used to learn are in the description above as well. if you want to see more canto vids let me know in the comments below!

P.S. my vlog channel's been demonetized since the first canto video - so... hopefully I can get it back up this year HAHA

As a person who speaks Cantonese, this is a great video. I like how you explain each of the ten common words step by step including the characters, pronunciation and meaning. Most Cantonese textbooks lack that part, which is why so many have given up.

I am from Hong Kong. Thanks for making video for promoting Cantonese, I will never know how to teach people how to speak the language. I imagine most Hong Kong people like me because we just learn it naturally from the environment.🙏🙏🙏

The great thing "hai-ah" is that if you say it quickly while also nodding, it can signal to someone trying to give you advice that yes, you totally get it and it'll shut them up quickly. It's like saying "yeah, I know I know I know" and it can even take on a sarcastic tone like, "yeah I KNOW you're totally right please stop giving me advice I get it I get it". Comes in very useful because if you have a lot of Chinese relations they are endlessly trying to give you advice from marriage to career to cooking tips to investing, and so on.

You sound like a native speaker, not someone who just learned it for 3 years. Very impressive! Love this!

You're really good at teaching Canto. You pace the video well, keep it simple and educate just a smidge in comparison to some overwhelming lessons out there. At least for a westerner like myself.

I only learned a few Cantonese words growing up in an English speaking household and was surprised by how many of these words I already knew. Making feel confident lol. Really enjoyed your teaching.

More videos like this, please! This was the perfect tone and content to keep the kids (and non-Chinese spouse) interested. Really appreciated your approach of using building block words, as a lot of other programs jump right in with phrases and dialogues, which is pretty overwhelming when you have no background at all. After watching this video and the Pretend to Speak Cantonese video, the kids could actually pick out and understand a sentence from the Canto movie we watched tonight!

I am a complete beginner at Cantonese, I have always struggled with learning any language. I have been watching many videos on how to learn and find your ones much easier to understand. For a beginner like me the small amount of words to learn at a time and the clear explanations are really good. Native speakers add way too much detail and complexity as it is so obvious to them.

You have a gift of teaching Cantonese. I am half Chinese and my dad only had us learn mandarin saying that Cantonese was too hard for us to learn. Until today I really struggled to approach learning Cantonese with confidence thinking there was no way I could ever understand it, but you have just completely encouraged me to learn with such an approachable few common words to start. Thank you so much 🙏🏼 (I am laying with my 2 year old son as he falls asleep and we watched your video together. We both repeated all the words with you 🥰) What is the name of the song in your intro?

Growing up living with my parents Cantonese for while was my first language but as i grew older and had all english friends, i have spoken cantonese less and less. My parents never taught us properly in this way like your video so i have no idea of pronouns or how to structure sentences properly, it was only learnt throw my parents talking and watch canto videos. Fast forward 30 odd years i have lost spoken cantonese and this video has really helped me get back in learning it especially as i would like to teach my daughter. These videos are super helpful to understand why we say certain sounds in cantonese. Thank you! More of these videos please for beginners!

This was so useful!! my boyfriend is Cantonese and i've been learning to speak to his parents for a few years now but I always end up with the wrong tones... this has helped so much and I can now put sentences together correctly :') would love to see more because hearing you say the word instead of reading off an app or website is very helpful indeed!

Your are such an amazing teacher. You have a way of breaking down an idea and make it easy to understand. As someone who already speaks mandarin and interested to learn canto, you make the best tutorial, informative and fun!

Please keep making more Canto videos. I am a gwei op and have been living here for 10 years and have been trying to learn for probably three however you videos make learning simple and clear, and fill in gaps in my learning! Especially with the writing explanations.... please keep making them.
