actually you do not have to wait until it dies!  my mom had a broken power button and i found you could go into the accessibility options and turn it off via software!

I just recently fixed my original iPhone 4 because of the broken power button which I had ordered replacement parts from iFixit along with their pro kit which is defiantly worth it

Actually it is important...especially if your phone freezes and you need to do a hard reset 'Power/Lock Button + Home Button'. Mine just did this...finally I have an excuse to buy the iPhone 6. :)
