I learned to read body language playing poker for money. Facial movements and shoulder position/movements were key to determining what hand another play was holding, and the confidence they had in their poker hand. Try not to look sad when you are holding a pair of deuces...

I noticed that in every tutorial I've seen on body language no one ever mentions visually impaired or blind people. Nonverbal cues and body language require decent vision in order to appropriately see and process body language, something that people with low vision or blindness don't have. Yet people with low vision still have to interact with the world, and are still being judged by the norms of body language. People with low vision typically do not model body language, proving that all body language is learned regardless of culture, as well as, being unable to interpret the body language of others. Further, those who do not have low vision typically are not able to recognize when someone else has low vision, thereby attribute a person's lack of body language as a negative message in itself. Which also leads to negative interactions and negative opinions of people with low vision. People with low vision are more verbal and put more emphasis on tone and word cadence to convey implicit meanings and emotions, yet this adaptive method of communication is often ignored or dismissed. As someone with low vision myself, I feel that sighted people need to do more to be aware of alternative explanations for incongruent or absent body language and adjust appropriately.
