I had looked at numerous vids here and yours have been the most helpful! First thanks! I mean when you explained many of the symptoms like coasting, it was exactly my issue. I first tried cleaning it with carb/TB cleaner and didn't work after a good warm up of the engine. I was still having starting with idle issues when the car is warmed up after 5-10 mins. After going to my local car shop and buying a new IAC, the auto in question, a 2003 F150 with about 166k miles on it started right up and did the same test after 5-10 minutes and also drove it around a bit to make sure the idle wasn't traveling while coasting and turning. And alas, the replacement worked! Thanks again!

Good explanation that made me connect the dots.
"Coast down" only YouTube guy that pointed that important detail.

My compliments on well done many YouTube poster's start out these videos with obnoxious music or seem infatuated with their own voices and face for minutes before getting to the point if they ever do at all. I wish it were that people like yourself were awarded for quality/content and the dopes were screened or never allowed to post their videos to begin

Glad you commented about the fact that the IAC moves very little. I was told a test you can do is remove the IAC while still plugged in. And then turn the key to the on position. The car will ready for start up by opening the IAC wide open. Likewise you can unplug it and the IAC should fully close. I tried it on my 2000 ranger and I don’t notice much of a difference. Even put on another one with similar results. But if what you are saying is true I may not have noticed the small movement change made.

A couple of raps with a wrench on the IAC valve will usually fix a stuck one due to carbon build up or just plain wear. Of course you should replace it ASAP.

Another great trick.. Can you answer the debate some of us have been having about the older Ford egr valves, ei, 2001 Ranger 4.0l. When smoke testing the intake, the egr's tend to leak alittle smoke out the bottom, some info says theyre supposed to, some guys say no, and back and forth we go. I've seen the same argument numerous times. If you could settle the debate since you seem to be the definite Ford guy to go to. Thanks much

So the purpose of the razor blade test is to see if the car starts and if it starts and runs good, you know that you have a bad IAC correct?

My 03 Ford Ranger Revs high at about 2000 - 2500 RPM when I start it up and wait for it to warm up in the morning. Could it be my IAC Valve or something else? Thanks!

How does the ECM know to open/close the IAC? Does it use rpm information to taper it on/ off ?

Note. I am building a little jeep and making a ford 2.3l carb into an efi engine. Working on a starting but not sure what my ecm is thinking

I have a '94 Mark VIII 4.6 in my '55 TBird. It idles fine but if I blip the throttle or when I come to a stop with the clutch disengaged the idle is around 1600 rpm for 5 or 6 seconds before it drops to 700. I recently swapped a spare (used) IAC and it was little worse, hanging at 2000 rpm for 5-6 seconds before returning to normal. When I first drove the car several years ago I assumed the high idle was due to the ECU looking for the 4R70W transmission. But I noticed when the cooling fan comes on at idle the engine nearly dies. It wasn't clear to me what you are checking by starting the car with the razor blades holding the throttle open slightly. I watch your videos and have learned quite a bit, thanks for doing what you do.
