In Defense of Bishop Robert Barron W/ Fr. Mike Schmitz

Father Mike and I respond to the flak Bishop Barron has been receiving on his recently expressed view that we may "Dare Hope" that all men will be saved. I share a story that I think illustrates the importance of Bishop Barron's reach and mission. We go on to talk about when it's appropriate to correct public Catholic figures and how to do so in charity.

Bishop Barron brought me to Catholicism this past year. I am currently in RCIA and deeply grateful for his social media outreach.

To all those in this comment section claiming Bishop Robert Barron denies the existence of Hell. You ought to repent of the sin of calumny immediately and publicly.

From his website:

Does Bishop Barron deny that hell exists?

No. Bishop Barron does not deny the
existence of hell, because to do so would be to deny permanent and authoritative Church doctrine. He agrees hell exists and is a real possibility for every person.

I am not a Catholic but I am a Christ follower. 50% of what I watch on YouTube to learn more about Christ is catholic podcast. Protestants and Catholics alike are Christ followers. I wish all Christians would come together to make this world a better place. Thank God for Bishop Barron. He is one of my favorites. He feeds me in a way that a lot of protestant preachers do not. I just want more God in my life period! End of story.

There should be no shock over hope for universal salvation. This hope goes all the way back to the church fathers. St. Gregory of Nyssa comes to mind. A sophisticated understanding of hell tells you that everyone who is in hell actually wants to be there due to willful isolation from God. It is a logical result of free will. The hope and desire that all creation may come around to willful unity with God is a very Christian and loving sentiment.

“Daring to hope” is not the same thing as “daring to proclaim definitively” that all might be saved. Every single person is not without hope, and we should approach our evangelism with the confidence and optimism that every person is a potential recipient of the transforming grace of God

Barron is a great teacher. We all have gifts-you will be judged on how well you use those gifts. Diverse gifts-one Spirit. We are not all evangelists. Gossip is a sin. I wonder how much of our knit-picking comes close to that. Bishop Barron is a hard worker. He explains the mysteries so indepth, I praise God for him. He's got a handle on love. He thinks thoughts others seldom touch. What a valuable asset to our Catholic faith! ✝️🙏❣

O my Jesus, save us from the fires of hell, and lead ALL souls to heaven; especially those most in need of thy mercy. Also see Rom 5:18.

Even Peter argued with Paul over how to reach out to converts.

Bishop Barron really screwed up on that interview with Ben Shapiro.

I just listened to Bishop Barron again making his comments and I heard nothing heretical about them at all. He is a brilliant god serving evangelist of the modern era and his comments unite rather than divide. Thank God for him.

I am sure that Bishop Barron has saved many a soul for God. And I am also sure that Satan has a particular hatred of him for doing so. It occurred to me that the Evil One may have stirred up these controversies to discredit all the good resulting from the Bishop's work. I suggest we pray regularly for all our priests, and especially for our evangelists like Bishop Barron and Father Mike.

Bishop Barron never said Hell is empty, he only said he hopes it is empty. My question is, why do all of you so adamantly hope that it is not?
Don’t worry, I believe in Hell, I know how easy it is to be damned because I know how monstrous I am, what a terrible sinner I am. Maybe you should also keep in mind how terribly imperfect you are, how your heart is made of stone, while you accuse Bishop Barron of heresy while hundreds if not thousands have converted, some having left a life of atheism and come to the Catholic Church, because of his work. What do you think is worse, Bishop Barron hoping all will be saved (while stating very clearly that it’s entirely possible many are not), or people doing absolutely nothing other than polarizing and dividing Our Suffering Mother, the Church and Bride of Jesus Christ?
Clearly heresy is a problem, but you need to pick your battles, and as good Catholics you should always err on the side of innocence, assuming that the person has the right intentions and that what they are saying can be properly interpreted in line with doctrine. Looking for heresy like a needle in a haystack is not the same as fighting against it.
Don’t you know that when parents fight, the kids rebel against both rather than pick sides? You should never create scandal unless you seriously believe (and have the authority to discern such matters and take action) that the damages caused by scandal and division will be smaller than the damages caused by silence or subtle forms of action.
You have all been undermining the authority of the Church by bickering amongst each other in public and making a debate club out of Our Mother.
This is the sin of scandal, do not think it is not. There are plenty of ways to address these issues properly without creating scandal. Shame on us all for loving self-righteousness and finger-wagging rather than collaboration and true discernment. It would not have been that difficult for all of you to discern that creating scandal is the stupidest thing to do at a time like this in the Church. We already appear frail and divided, and that is precisely what is causing the decline in numbers of Catholics. It is not because the Church is too liberal, it is not because the Church is too conservative, it is because no two representatives of the Church seem capable of agreeing on anything, and we are utterly failing at presenting a uniform and united front. It is too divided; why would anyone trust such a divided institution that can’t seem to agree with itself on anything? What a silly generation, democratizing religion and thinking, thanks to social media platforms, that each one of us has an opinion that matters.

Pleased that Fr Mike agrees with the Church, the saints, and TnT. I'm impressed that he can put things so....calmly.

Bishop brings comfort.
I am not Catholic yet I often listen to his interesting way of using story blended in a very sweet truthful voice.
Clear, kind and loving way to lead and bring people to find peace.
Anyone who does not approve of him can just move away.
If God is what Bishop Barren says that is nice.

Finding Bishop Barron’s YouTube channel is what brought me to Catholicism. He’s brilliant!! Those who dislike or criticize him are not able to understand and appreciate his knowledge.

Bishop Barron needs to be clear that there is a Hell period, that’s all Dr Taylor was pointing out , hopefully Bishop will retract his comment and teach his children there is a Hell and anybody who is in a state of mortal sin can be condemned according to what Jesus says in the Bible.I would like to add I have heard bishop Barron talks on other topics and found it really good, unfortunately in our times with modernist watering down our faith we get a little nervous when we hear another comment which creates ambiguity
