I can't say how much it thrills me that I have read three out of five of these works. I would also put them in my favorites. The Seven Storey Mountain, especially, as it had probably the most profound influence on my conversion from atheism to Catholicism.

No philosophy pick? I'm assuming the Summa fit both categories for you Father? My friends and I wonder if that's a copy of Lonergan's Insight behind you in your office, and what (if any) influence Lonergan has had on your work for the New Evangelism. Thanks for being such a wonderful presence in the Digital Cosmopolis!

Bishop Barron, what are your top five favorite movies?

My top five favorites are:
1. Braveheart
2. Hacksaw Ridge
3. Life of Pi
4. Slumdog Millionare
5. It's a Wonderful Life

Btw, I really like you're commentary on movies. They are really profound and well analysed from a catholic perspective.

Greetings, Fr. Barrons: It seems I've returned to that edge of the wood in my late 60s, and it is now I am about to move my soul with Dante's Divine Comedy, but in so doing, I am wrestling with which translation most reflects the spirit of Dante's language. There are two in my possession at this moment: Longfellow's, and Charles Eliot Norton's. In the interest of the study, I am about to order in a course from The Great Courses, and noting that their first lecture begins with discussion on the translations (though I know not which they've chosen), and because you have no doubt read it in the Italian and are wonderfully articulate in English, I would be grateful for your kindly suggestions. Dore's peerless works illustrating the Comedy were my Virgil when I was a young man, and they move me tremendously still. Thank you for considering this question. I admire your erudition and bravery in tackling the issues you do with such care and kindness. Bless you and your work.

I love Macbeth! That’s one of the plays/books that got me into literature.(alongside Of Mice and Men).
I’m currently reading Moby Dick though I am missing the part about sex... I do love the part where Ishmael decides he’ll give the friendship with Quiqueg a shot, and they overcome the societal expectations of two races not being good to each other.

Really surprised not to hear any Lord of the Rings! I knew the Divine Comedy for sure would be on here

Father kindly and candidly answered to an out of order (silly) question on the part of the interviewer. A priest has to read dozens and dozens of books before being ordained, and many more after that (Bible being the default, duh) What a question, really... Our opinions are even more limited than the question and the answer.

I would advice you to read Al Ghazali's work (especially, "Revival of Religious teachings"), Sir. He was the guy whom St Thomas was greatly inspired by, along with Ibn Rush. It's not until you read Ghazali's monumental work (Ihya Uloom Ad'deen) that you'll understand where St Thomas got much of his thinking from.

Hi, Father. Great video as always. From a different video, I know you also like Augustine's Confessions. Is there a particular translation you would recommend?  I've heard that having a good translation is important to understanding Augustine. Thanks a lot!
