Today we take a look at why Microsoft are now allowing people on Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, there is a catch, but Microsoft are now saying you can do it. Microsoft warns users of potential instabilities with this type of install or upgrade and Microsoft doesn't guarantee official support, updates, or compatibility for computers with unsupported hardware.

Installing Windows 11 on devices that don't meet minimum system requirements

Ways to install Windows 11

Warning:

Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements. If you choose to install Windows 11 on a device that does not meet these requirements, and you acknowledge and understand the risks, you can create the following registry key values and bypass the check for TPM 2.0 (at least TPM 1.2 is required) and the CPU family and model.

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup

Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 1

Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

If you aren’t guaranteed security updates after going to Windows 11, theres no reason to upgrade from Windows 10, at least to me.

I think microsoft forget that most home users are not replacing their computers as much these days and it's a low priority compared to other bills and expenses.

Microsoft simply cannot expect millions upon millions people to just ditch their perfectly good machines and run buying new to continue having a safe system. This is also very unecological, producing tons and tons of sudden e-waste. Where would it go?

Wasn't Windows 10 "the last Windows you'll ever need to install", according to Microsoft in 2015 ? They were touting Win 10 as forever updateable. Yet here we are, lol. 💩

We have not needed TPM2 for 30 years. What great security threat has arisen that the average user suddenly needs it right now? This is another MSFT miscalculation like Windows 8.

You can take this as a win my friend. I'm sure it's because of content creators such as yourself, Titus, Heirens, etc that Microsoft has changed their position. I service PCs for the elderly at our local Senior Center and I can tell you first hand that these people haven't got the means to upgrade to a new PC. They're willing to accept almost any option that keeps them connected without costing more than they can afford to spend. Thank You for all you do.

"Allowing" is a bit of a strong word to use. It's more like they begrudgingly acknowledged the workaround.

The bite is real. lots of people aren't upgrading as expected and it seems the panic is increasing too. i recently received the "end of life message for windows 10". Windows 10 is the king for me.

I seem to remember when Win 10 was introduced we were told that it would be the last version of Windows and would simply be updated as required. Didn’t believe Microsoft then - never have trusted them!

Windows 11 is the advertisement for linux.

Millions of PCs that work absolutely fine prevented from upgrading from an arbitrary decision made by Microsoft to try to boost PC sales is why Windows 10 is still going strong.

I have a computer from the mid-to-late 2010s with an older CPU. The Windows Upgrade section in Windows 10 used to say that this system does not meet the system requirements for Windows 11. Now it says “Get Ready for Windows 11” but does not have an upgrade button yet. Aside from having an older CPU it otherwise meets the requirements.

Thanks for the video, it was informative as always. In my case, I believe they have started to clamp down on old hardware running the initial versions of Win 11. In my case for the past 2 days Instead of getting updates each time I check, I have got a notice saying "Your version of Windows has reached end of service. Click to download a newer version of Windows 11 to stay updated" Of course when I click nothing happens

I have already moved to Linux completely after being frustrated by having a capable laptop whose processor (albeit being stronger than some on the Win 11 supported Hardware list) was not supported.
Thank you millions, Microsoft, you opend a whole new world for me with your Win 11 resttictions, this was the best you did for me and anyone in the last 30+ years! I'm grateful not having to be part of the "Recall-ecosystrm" anymore. You're the best, Microsoft, thank you for supporting Linux and all the best!

I am sure Valve´s announcement of Steam OS has nothing to do with Microsoft´s change of mind.

It's never made sense to me that my old but expensive Dell computer with an i7 processor isn't good enough hardware to update to windows 11

My 12 year old pc loves Linux Mint, and so do I. I suggest this route to everyone who isn’t a fan of Microsoft bloatware.

Windows 11 was supposed to be a gift to PC manufacturers, to help revitalize their slumping computer sales, but nobody's buying it

Brian...which screen reader software are you using that enables recording of the shut down and boot up process with windows?
