You’re Texturing Wrong. (Do THIS Instead!)

In this Blender tutorial, we will be breaking down a more sophisticated and arguably, better way of texturing in the Shader editor.

This pulls heavily from Substance Painter by utilizing the layer-based workflow.
I will demonstrate this by creating a simple, stylized shader, however, this is just scratching the surface of what is capable with this technique.

Memes are great to have but might have gone a bit overboard here. They're fine for meme tutorials but there's legit knowledge here.

Great video, will def put this into practice. As for the editing and sfx I found them a little distracting but maybe that's just me :)

Thanks for the video, nice technique, but I feel overstimulated after watching this short clip 😂 Seriously, too much is going on.

Can we just talk about the "wrong" way to texturing. It's not wrong, it's the start. That's what you do before you learn and the last thing you will do after you learn more.

I like the idea but you can do this if you are lazy-- I mean if you want procedural. I would prefer using Image Texture as a mask for a Texture/Image that you downloaded from somewhere because with that you can control the parts that has a moss and which part doesn't (like Substance Painter)

Still, great video for new people that wants to learn blender but also bad because it makes texturing like a daunting/hard process because of the use of too many nodes.

i like the not-so-fast pacing with this kind of editing mixed with the calming voice, just gets me interseted for every video of yours, thank you smeaf!

Great technique ! What i found out is also very effective is to set a simple gradient like you do at first and then blend with mixRGB the texture coordinate and a noise texture with linear light blend mode. It messes with the UV of the gradient and it gets the mask distorted way faster imo.

this video is really helpful and interesting! your commentary is to the point and you're great at explaining the concepts in an engaging, simple to understand way, but the editing is way too distracting and i feel like there's just too much packed in, maybe having 1 or 2 editing jokes would be good but at this point it's overwhelming and confusing. while i enjoy the effort you put in and to me the pacing of the video is great, i think toning it down on the amount of edits might work better for these sorts of videos. thank you for this great video though and i look forward to seeing more from ya!

Just watched a 30 min tutorial about this same style effect before coming here, you did everything in 3 minutes and actually made me understand it better. Thank you very much 🐐🐐

Love these short videos! Keep up the hard work!
Just a quick question, how are you making the nodes automatically connect without you having to drag the branches into each specific point? Thanks!

I love these tutorials simple and easy to understand keep doing more on texturing and uv mapping and topology!

I subscribed so fast. I’ve been in need of “like substance but in blender” types of stylization workflows. Thank you for making this!

I was searching for fractures in blender and found your ground breaking video( no pun intended :), subscribed ! and you just uploaded a new video in few seconds, cool....

Love the way this video was crafted! Your video editing is on point!

I layer my materials with mix shader and several principled shaders instead. Gives more control over all the different PBR characteristics of each layer.
And when you bake it in the end using bake wrangler, it combine all the shaders into one.

The editing on this video is insane. You’re putting in so much work into such a simple explanation video.

Fast, to the point, informative, and didn't make me fall asleep

Well done

Nice work! I might suggest using the vertex normal (world space or local space depending on the need) to generate the initial gradient for a lil more interesting break up of the shading. Also not sure if blender has a node for height to normal, but if it does you could take your moss mask and run it through that, break the channels apart and you d get some outlines (split the r and g, adjust the levels, prolly add em together )of your moss to help bridge the connection and create a sense of depth with it

Hello, beginner question here!

At 1:25 and after, how did you put these frames captioned "Base" and "Mid" around those nodes?

God I love quick tutorials and thanks for not saying "HEY WHAT'S GOING ON GUYS TODAY WERE GOING TO-"
I've learned, and I learned fast 10/10. My only complaint is you don't need to hold my attention with memes and sfx, your clear and smooth voice is all I need.
