Geographic Information Systems and Project Based Learning in a
Hybrid Classroom Environment ---

The COVID-19 pandemic has created numerous challenges to instructors implementing technology-based project based learning (PBL). At Tennessee State University (TSU), selected introductory-level world regional
geography courses have included geographic information systems (GIS) content for several years. Students are required to complete up to five assignments using ArcGIS Online. The course delivery format has been
redesigned to fit virtual and hybrid formats. The classroom has essentially been “flipped,” with students viewing pre-recorded lectures outside of class time and completing GIS exercises in PBL fashion during class
time. This presentation includes a live demonstration of the delivery a lesson preparing students for the final exam project. Students are required to create an Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) StoryMap
displaying population pyramids for countries in Latin America/Caribbean and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The map content boxes are to be filled with descriptive information about each nation’s population structure and comparisons of Latin America/Caribbean versus CIS population structures.
