How to become a racing driver

We visit Nissan's NISMO Lab with karting ace Kiern Jewiss and Nissan GT Academy star Jann Mardenborough to learn the ropes

What does it take to become a racing driver? Is it pure intuition? Is it a mixture of dedication, attitude and perception? Or does practice simply make perfect?

To find out, we meet 14-year-old karting ace Kiern Jewiss at Nissan’s NISMO Lab test facility at Silverstone, Northants. Joining us is GT Academy star Jann Mardenborough, whose unconventional path to motor racing (from computer games) offers a different perspective to many of today’s top drivers.

How to become a racing driver:
-Rich parents;
-Share the same passion as one of your parents;
-Supportive parents;
-Be in racing at age of 8;
-have somewhere to train to become good;
-have a agent;
-if you get good at it you may be able to get "sponsorships" like NISMO;

In 2015 I was #38 out of ~400, 000 in GT Academy. I needed to be #32 or higher to make it to Silverstone. I hovered in the top 8 for hours so I thought I got in easy, took a quick nap, woke up at #40 and my heart dropped. I wanted it so bad.

I'm 19 going on to 20 within a week. My name's Eric Zeller and as I was growing up over the years I realized that I was attracted to all types of racing games and nothing but. The main racing game I play now is forza 6 on Xbox one. The first racing game I ever played was flat out 2 on the ps2. At the age I am now, I think about what I want to do with my life and nothing has ever made me feel more alive then getting behind the wheel. Whether it be a game, a video I'm watching, or my own 2016 Chevrolet Trax; the feeling that comes over me is like electricity flowing through my blood. (and if you look up my car, you'll know it's not meant for speed nor is it expensive: hence not rich)
Now, we all know you can only go so fast for so long before red and blue lights are behind you. I have a dream to become a racer, I have a dream to cross the finish line having my last name Zeller chanted through every speaker on the track, I have a passion that burns within me to do something amazing on the track. With that being said, I think I have what it takes to be a race car driver; but sadly it's a wishful thinking type of dream because I don't have the money to become a race car driver. Even with that obstacle in my way, I still have this dream and passion that I will strive for and will never give up on making progress in myself. Ik this is just a YouTube post but maybe the right person will see this and believe in me; and they might just take that risk that puts me In my dream and them in a place of happiness, but more than that, a place in history.

I therotically have a semi gut feeling I can personally make it to the racing industry. Yeah I'm 6'4 188-192lbs but I don't let that try to hold me back.

I'm now 12 and was a petrolhead from birth on. At the age of 6 I finally started sim racing when my dad bought me a thrustmaster wheel (I had my best time in project cars 1. It was great). I had the passion through out all years and with 10 I made me a sim setup for my room with a brand-new t150 wheel and project cars 2 (and an old monitor). I've already spent 2 days in the sim and it's great, especially the Nürburgring in gt3. I normally drive around 8:30 at Nürburgring combined (there where the 24h race is held (the real life drivers drive 8:10 during the race))
And my biggest dream is it to drive for the Land Audi team.
