Access Your Home Assistant YAML Files

Home Assistant is a pretty powerful platform to build your smart home on. But in some ways, it is not all that user-friendly to those used to doing everything with an app on their phone.

In fact, at times it can be a bit maddening. For example, in many of the integrations, the documentation says you need to make changes directly to the configuration.YAML file. But in a fresh install of Home Assistant, there is no access to the configuration.YAML file.

So in this video, we are going to cover two ways to access those files.

Awesome, super-simple explanation that I wasn't able to get from the HA documentation.

WinSCP can also be another way thats fairly easy to use especially if you already have SSH installed.

A lot of UI-based configuration never ends up in YAML files. Thankfully, the embedded “show code” editor supports copy and paste, so I can copy from the browser, paste into a local editor, make changes, and copy/paste it back.

Try changing a grid of grid cards to move the cards around within the grids. There is no UI support, and you have to edit the raw YAML for the entire view.

Thanks that was useful

I found that my HA has in the sidebar Settings instead of Configuration and that Configurations were to be found in Settings > Devices & Services

I got to the end of your vid ready to add integration HACS and the options tell me that I know that there are no add-ons in HACS -

QUESTION: So does that mean that the HA add ons wont work if I turn on HACS

Thanks, I subscribed. I now know why I used node-red for all my stuff back 4 or 5 years ago. Script files can suck. From an old amiga/Linux/Mac and QNX user.
