Could this be refined to a phone charger?

This is a free piston Ringbom Stirling Engine that I bought from Aliexpress. Its so simple and quiet that maybe a bigger and optimised version could be used as a phone charger or emergency power generator.

Could put a capacitor accross the output of the rectifier. Would help to make the LED shine more evenly.

Neat motor. You should have turned the lights out though so we can see the LED.

Yes cute little stirling engine and generator. Yes a rectifier would give you DC instead of pulsing voltage BUT i think its made to just be a cute demonstrator
Great for a Classroom

Brilliant! I wonder if it could be powered by focussed sunlight instead of flame?

Great design, I love the Ringbon- Stirling engine, it´s the same design idea which NASA used in one of their spacecrafts.
This is a really nice demonstrator. Can you link to the product ?

Thats all i want.. To make a small Stirling that can charge a smart phone

That's a weird Stirling engine, i like it

Replace with led with a 5.5v capacitor an add a power bank with a removable battery to that . the power banks led will indicate charging an when fully charged

I wonder what the velocity and frequency of the piston is because while it may not generate current i imagine it could be mechanically more efficient than a stirling that moves a wheel due to there being less friction. So in the case of say a tattoo machine if we disregard the voltage that is generated and just look at the mechanical force this could be a viable option for powering a wireless tattoo machine especially if you could regulate the freequency somehow.

An injection-molded version with flextures instead of pistons could perhaps meet the market demands... Getting enough power output would however be extremely challenging.

Regarding the question of if it could be refined to a phone charger, that is not the important question. Of course it could be scaled up. The important question is would it economically feasible. The LED takes about 70 milliwatts. A phone charger supplies about 2 to 6 watts. That would take between 30 and 80 times the output. Smaller currents can be used to slow charge but realisticlly it would take a much larger device. Sterling engines are not very efficient, they 're best use is to extract waste heat and convert it into rotational motion. When you start converting to electrical energy there are more losses to consider. Running one using dedicated fuel would not be cost effective at all. Even if the heat is a byproduct that would otherwise be wasted it still is not the best option. A thermoelectric generator cell is more efficient, silent, and cheaper. The Stirling engine is at best a fascinating novelty

I intuitively guess that this coil is too small for directly charging a phone with it, and the engine is pretty small too (the frequency is high though).

thanks for posting. here are some things to consider. it should be understood that a so-called 'free piston', is simply a piston NOT configured to do Work, EFFICIENTLY. it should be understood that a reciprocating machine has ZERO conservation of momentum. UNLESS, the output motion is Converted to ROTARY. output force of ANY heat engine SHOULD be 'utilized' Only AFTER Concentration/Smoothing of force, via the use of a crankshaft. in the engine seen here, the load (of the pma) has been made A PART of the engine. doh. so, no cigar. cheers googletranslate

Is the only difference between this engine and the Stirling engine the free piston?

lets put a larger coil and rectify that coil into a bridge diode then send it to a dc to dc converter and step it uo to 5vdc and Voila! a phone charger!

Is that a rectifier at the base of the led?
