This video will be on the current American bayonet as of 2022 the m9. The m9 bayonet began replacing the aging m7 design from Vietnam era in 1986. The m9 is based off of a Russian design of some bayonet and older style fighting knives used by the army and marines in wwii. The blade is a full tang extremely thick piece of steel with a very traditional clip point blade that interacts with the sheath to create a wire cutters.

Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, comment, user experiences, or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.

I have both the M9 and two AKM (1 romanian and 1 yugo) bayonets and have had them for years now... and only today after hearing it from you did i realize they look VERY similar.

Was considering knives for concealed carry self defense, this one popped into my head, and I found your video. You are thorough, concise, and an amazing speaker with a great personality. You earned a sub, I have a hunch you'll get big if you keep going.

You missed a the biggest influence on the M9s design. The BuckMaster 184 survival knife. It was directly inspired by that knife.

It came before the M9.

Two things, the saw blade was made that way to be able to cut wood in a pinch and also be able to cut thick hemp rope and things like that. The blade itself is zoned tempered

Apparently the Dutch Army hated these as they kept breaking. I do not know the manufacturer. As for the wire cutter thing, I'm British so i compare it to the SA80/L89A1/2 bayonet and scabbard, i always ask WHY? Why take a chance breaking your last resort/close encounter weapon when a "wire cutter" in a pouch would work better. I would love to hear from any Army how they got on with these as wire cutters, imagine, its dark, found wire, ok bayonet out, now i have to take my scabbard off my loadout/webgear? Really.

My issued M9 (1988) came with a crappy sharpening stone in the pouch attached to the sheath

I was under the assumption that the purpose of the pouch was for a pistol mag more specifically the m9a2 magazine

2 things. First, that's a drop point, not a clip point, though I do commend you for pointing out that the blade is different from one side to the other. Second, you didn't mention that this is the most common knife in video games i.e. the Combat Knife from resident Evil is based on it, though lots of other games use it as a model.
