This is a load of bs. We always sharpened our bayonetes so we could use them as a knife and you can sharpen it as many times as you want and it is perfectly servicable. Unless you have some junk bayonete they can be used as a knife and a bayonete. We were never "forbidden" to sharpen them either

Are you kidding me. In all of history, before firearms were invented, you think people didn't sharpen spears or short swords because "it would lose it's cutting edge"?! Flesh is soft. Cloth protects flesh. Big point sticks into cloth, and into flesh, big point is removed from hole in guy, and repeated. That's the point of a spear, and that's the point of making your long wooden stick that goes bang bang with lead seeds, into mankind's most prolific basic weapon. A spear.

Are you unaware of how a knife meant to be used in both utility and combat works? Let me cut open this mre bag with my dull m9 bayonet. O h w a i t

This is complete nonsense, especially with newer multi-purpose bayonets designs, which are made to perform utility tasks other than inflicting injury.

This is ridiculous! While some bayonets were indeed only for piercing (like the French WW1 lebel bayonet which was basically triangular), most have a distinct knife shape which wouldn't be necessary if it wasn't for cutting. It is possible that some regulations forbid to sharpen bayonets e.g. in peace times to prevent injuries. But my Swiss military bayonet was certainly sharp from the arsenal and I know that in WW1 at least the Germans sharpened their bayonets. Just because a bayonet is mainly for thrusting doesn't mean you shouldn't keep other options in reserve like cutting, especially if the entire design screams "I'm a big knife"!

You can definitely sharpen a bayonet but it won't stay strong as long as a actual knife because bayonets are made of softer Steel and it is looked down upon when it comes to bayonet collecting

That makes absolutely NO sense at all!

It’s true, but you didn’t explain why correctly. I was a soldier and it is forbidden to sharpen it and must be kept clean.

Historically, the bayonet replaces the spear, intended for close combat and especially cavalry..it is not sharpened because there is a risk of getting stuck in the bone and it will not be pulled out, the blade would be dulled anyway in combat conditions..a stab wound causes organ damage and requires medical treatment, a cut wound it's usually ugly but superficial, it's a knife, not a saber or a sword, it doesn't penetrate equipment...

My M7 bayonet was issued sharp af lol . What a load of bs this is. Yeah some bayonets may have have been issued unsharpeded in some places but I never heard of sharpening being forbidden..it sure as Hell wouldn't have rendered it useless lol😂.

What? I think he's referring to carving teeth in the back of a bayonet. It was a big nono in WW1.

Do not sharpen your bayonet as it reduces “Rib parting ability”
