Since the days of Margaret Thatcher, Britain has claimed to be a ‘climate leader’. But when we look at the country's record both past and present, this really couldn’t be further from the truth.

We don’t have a chance without getting rid of the system that gives power to those doing most of the damage

Compared to somewhere like Iceland? No, the UK is miles behind. Heck, even in certain cities in Germany areas have been effectively pedestrianised (so less cars going about) and nice greenery has been planted, which is more than I can say of London's attempts to do something similar in recent years.

In Johnson's delusional mind he is a leader in everything.

Leading... I have a few questions: who is following you? To be a leader you need followers. I don't think anyone on this planet thinks of the UK as a leader in anything. Not that the world thinks of the UK in negative terms, just not "leading". What is it with Brits and Americans obsession to be no. 1 in everything, despite them not being no. 1 in any rankings in terms of living standards, healthcare, education, life expectancy, quality of life, etc.? Where are you going? Leading means going somewhere, where is the UK going?

The UK population as a majority would never accept the concept of wealth transfer back to the global south and the destruction of their way of life. Change is always going to be slow.

What Harpreet said about imposing 'loans' etc on countries for "climate change', organisations such as the IMF have been doing that for many decades, often bankrupting the country.

Great work, I'm trying to be optimistic about climate change but it's hard not to fall into pessimism

Since the 80s the UK has reduced it's emmisions by over 2/3rds much more than any other advanced economy. The UK is most certainly a world leader in reducing emmisions and many other countries would do well to watch especially China

I'd be happy committing to carbon neutrality by 2040. It would be better if Europe and United States did it as a whole.
Having said that, I'm not aware of the changes needed to reach net zero by 2040. It's probably not as pleasant as 2050.

Hmmmm the Tories enshrined fixed term parliaments into law too. As we have seen, when the Tories don't like the law they either ignore it or change it, so enshrining net zero into law is just empty, gesture politics. Let's face it, the Tories will only embrace net zero if they and their chums can get rich off it.

Coincidentally during the same timeframe England chose money handling over manufacturing as it's leading industry. It's North Sea resources largely depleted. Easy coal gone. With it's most recent trade deals it's also crushing farming choosing instead to buy offshore meat etc.. In other words declaring victory while standing on a pile of rubble.
