Freedom for excellence is “not self-determination. It is the disciplining of desire so as to make the achievement of the good first possible and then effortless.”

You don't have to be very religious to understand and appreciate the importance and the significance of having something to believe in, something bigger than you that calls you to be your best self.

As a dancer, I really enjoyed this. I always tell my students, "The more control...the more freedom".

Im from a predominantly buddhist country and far from the west but I love listening to these brilliant people speak and it shows how ignorant I was to dismiss religion as myth and superstition.

It took me a long time to understand that the Ten Commandments are Divine rules for freedom, joy, and happiness.
Some make the distinction that freedom is the freedom to chose the good, while license is merely unbridled self-service.

It's a sublime experience to watch a masterful public-speaker talk to an audience without using a teleprompter, especially when the speaker truly cares about his subject matter. Bishop Barron has mastered the art of public speaking. He has been chasing excellence for a long time.

I'm beyond happy to see Bishop Robert Barron at ARC! Born and raised Catholic but never confirmed, as I never agreed with the dogma. But the older I get and the further exposed to other Christian religions I become, the one thing I have realized that the Catholics do have right is our openness to philosophy and discussion. Bishop Robert Barron is a prime example of this. ❤

Superb speech. The Bishop came across really well. That's the type of senior clergyman you want to see, not the wishy-washy Church of England types who espouse so many of the modern trends of identity politics etc. Hope the ARC conference went well. Thanks so much for sharing the speeches with all those of us who did not attend. Much appreciated.

Never thought I'd hear a bishop discuss golf, Bob Dylan and King David all in one speech, but it was certainly worthwhile.
