In this video I show you how to configure a new Active Directory Domain on Windows Server 2022. I also take the time to explain each of the steps and what the options mean. You can follow these instructions when installing Windows Server 2022 on to both a physical server or a virtual machine.

In this guide, I cover:
-Document a new Server Installation and domain
-Promote a Windows Server 2022 Server to a Domain Controller with Active Directory
--Installation and configuration of Microsoft Active Directory
--Promote a server as a new domain controller
---Overview of Forest Functional Level
---Overview of Domain Functional Level
---Overview of DSRM (Domain Services Restore Mode) and Password
--Installation and configuration of DNS Role
--Installation and configuration of DHCP Role
-Setup and configuration of a new user account on domain
-Creation of DHCP Scope for Network

This video is part of a multi-video playlist containing how-to's on deploying various technologies with Microsoft Windows Server 2022.

I am studying for my CompTIA A+ Certification and I came across a section in my book on Active Directory. I had never heard of Active Directory before but WOW was it powerful and super interesting... so I wanted to use it myself. This video (and the one before it) helped me to do just that! Thank you so much for helping me learn!! You've earned a subscriber

I have been using SBS since it's conception. The person that tought me was the famous Harry Brelsford. I fell in love with SBS and enjoyed it imensely.
I have a standalone server that I am going to be setting up just what you have gone over. Your video was a very good source of learning. I will be looking forward to a continuing video series on Server 2022. Keep them coming.

Thanks - very clear and concise. Trying to scrounge all the necessary bits to setup a new 2022 Standard server. Only past experience is with SBS 2003 and SBS 2011, and unfortunately Microsoft no longer provides those streamlined and pre-configured Small Business options any more. Would have gone with Essentials, but apparently they stripped the Remote Desktop Gateway role as of Server Essentials 2019 (was in 2016). Anyway, thanks again!

Your videos were very concise & easy to follow. One question I have: I'm attempting to set up a DC in my home lab. I have WS 2022 installed on a PowerEdge R210 II I got from work. When setting up AD DS, is it possible to use .local as the parent domain, or is that something that could only be used on something like a child domain?

I see you made notes in Notepad about the network where you specify the names, IPs, and services for each component. Is this an industry standard way of taking notes of a domain or is it a pattern you've come up with?

It looks very clean and organized which is why I'm wondering

So you showed that on your NIC settings, the DNS address changed from your router IP to just a loopback - after AD & DNS were installed. So for external internet addresses to be resolved, is there somewhere in the DNS server settings that it still points to your router IP (or ISP DNS IPs) for external lookups? I understand the DHCP MMC clearly, but the DNS MMC is a bit more confusing.

I have a question, not totally related with your video, but: it's necessary to use AD to use RDS? It's possible to use only the RDS without the Active Directory...

Hi, is there a way to make the domain server accessible from anywhere? So I would still be able to login and access all user accounts without being on my network

So I see you just use your external domain name for your AD name. What to name the AD seems to be a contentious topic. There are several common approaches being typical 1) subdomain 2) local 3) or same as external. Pros and cons with each. local is the old SBS way of doing things, but this seems to be an issue nowadays for issuing certs. For your demo you used the same AD name as the external domain, but I've read that can cause DNS challenges for users needing to also get to the external sites. But Microsoft's currently recommended way of using a subdomain (internal, corp, ad, etc) seems to force the AD short name (and NETBIOS name) to something less ideal (like \internal, instead of \STEPHENWAGER).

What do you recommend? Context in my case being an SBS 2011 that is being replaced (was .local), email now going to the cloud, DYN dynamic DNS, but server still needing inbound internet access for remote desktop gateway functionality. Thanks!
