As a kid I was obsessed with this movie and red tails and there story, I built model kits of all planes they used p51c p40 and the p51D in the Tuskegee airmen paint schemes and I look at them everyday and observe them like I haven’t had them for a while

I'm confused (it's been a minute since I saw this). If they weren't going to see action, P-40s would have made sense as Warhawks were obsolete by the time P-51s were on the scene. However, as those are Mustangs, why would they get one of America's top fighters just to do strafing runs?

Met a couple of these guys back in the 90s when they came to Andrews AFB.
Damn shame they were treated so crappy, but their success sure did shut a lot of runny mouths.
