After all these years, this film still fascinates me.

A lot of viewers seem to have some confusion about this scene. Otho here is attempting a Seance to force the 2 ghosts to appear to impress the big shots from New York. But not understanding the power of the book for the dead, he accidentally is performing an exorcism of Barbara and Adam. That's why they start decomposing/dying in their wedding clothes after appearing. Lydia gets this and that's why she asks Beetlejuice (who's an exorcist himself) to save them. This was foreshadowed earlier in the movie when the tour guide in the afterlife shows the closet of the exorcised spirits, and how it's "death for the dead".
