The reason why the console wouldn't turn on is because there is a cartridge lock inside the console that is connected to the power switch and the lock is suppose go inside a Japanese Mega Drive cartridge that has a little hole on the side. But because the western cartridges don't have that hole, the lock couldn't go all the way and therefore the power switch wouldn't go on.

By the way, European cartridges don't work on North American or Japanese systems. But this video was from 2012, so I hope Mark already knows all of this.

I still remember in 1992 when my dad bought me a Mega Drive! After having an Atari for a few years, I could how incredible the games looked on Mega Drive!! Haha...I was so overwhelmed by the power of a 16-bit console! Haha....Awesome, good times! I had so much fun on the 80's and 90's...Thanks for the review!!! Keep it up man!

The Japanese Mega Drive was released in 1988, not 1989

Mega Drive, forever the true name of the console IMO.

Probably been said a trillion times below but the game you're looking at at 1:20 is a PAL Mega Drive game, which resemble the US Genesis cartridges. Japanese Mega Drive carts did look different, they were slightly larger with rounded edges. Basically you've got a mismatch of game and console regions in this video, even though they all say "Mega Drive".

You should totally review a PAL Model 1 Mega Drive by the way :) it's my favourite styling by far.

I used to be a NES fanboy but now I don't care what system, it's all about the games. Every system has their hits and flops. I just love video games.

I like the European Mega Drive best, it has styling bits from both Genesis and Japanese Mega Drive and it says "High Definition Graphics - Stereo Sound" and Mega Drive logo has the styling remember from my childhood. And in addition instead of that ugly red or light purple it has stylish grey. It's just more sleek and easier to look at.

Oh MD! I remember my first games on this console. It was Sonic the hedgehog and Shadow dancer)That was the real 16bit power for me back then.

I never owned a Mega Drive, but I did end up with the Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which plays just fine on a Sega Genesis console.
