// My Story

I am currently a software developer who once modeled and thought I wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I was modeling in Hong Kong, I eventually felt the desire to further my education. I decided to depart the modeling world and move back to Canada, knowing that could be the end of my modeling opportunities. I attended Ryerson University for GCM (Graphic Communications Management), as I thought I might still work in the fashion industry in another capacity. It was in my last year of university, I was introduced to a very basic coding course. I instantly fell in love. From there I knew I wanted to pursue software development but didn't have a clue where to start. I didn't want to go back to university as I just completed a four-year degree. I decided to enroll in a 10-week intensive coding Bootcamp. From there I started working at a small startup learning and growing my technical and soft skills. I then transitioned to a larger company where I am a software developer and technical consultant today.

From my observations, a future-proof career will be based on two critical components: the ability to think (curiosity, long-term learning, etc.) and communicate well (plain English, the art of persuasion, knowledge of psychology, etc.).

This is depressing. I wish I can go back 20-30 years when things were more simple. The first time I heard of AI I knew it was bad news. Creating something to one up humans with the facade of “making things easier”. This all sounds exhausting. Upskilling, tech, AI, engineering are things I could care less about and I’m not about to fool myself into thinking I will have a “passion” and God how I’ve come to hate that word. If most of us were millionaires we could care less about finding a passionate job. I would just invest into companies and properties all the time. The thought that I will have to spend 20-40 years sitting at a desk for 40-50 hours a week trying to beat a robot is dreadful . I’m not sure what my kids will have to do to feed their families or if they will even be able to buy their own property. I absolutely despised tech/engineering when I was in college which is why I went the teaching route. Someone mentioned it in the comments but technical analysis isn’t everyones cup of tea. I’m in the middle of a career change right now and I’m trying to study some skill that will have leverage in the future. Teaching is ok but the pay will have me living paycheck to paycheck. The only options that will have me living decently would be roles related to software or data. Yes there are other non-traditional options like becoming an entrepreneur but you need money to start and connections. It’s like if I don’t do anything I will be swallowed whole buy AI and if I do give in I will be miserable everyday doing something I hate. It feels like I’m being pushed into a corner but hey as a girl there’s always the option of marrying rich in my 20s because that’s what’s trending now.

Any engineering job is still going to be in demand for the next 100 years.

I'm in between wanting to be a cyber security engineer and data scientist.... I like researching things, but security will always be important.

Great video Tiff, but I was wondering if you purposely omitted Cloud related jobs or don't see any of them as relevant/most in demand in the years to come.

Great video. But the world is turning into a tech world and not everybody’s x-capable of being a tech guy. Also upskilling is all good when you are in your 20s or 30s but when you’re getting in your 50s and you have been a truck driver all your life, there’s no way you can possible become an expert in cyber security or block chain or what have you.

I think cloud architect/devops engineer will still be growing as well. Someone will need to maintain those SaaS infrastructure.

Great video! One problem I fear from all of this is that as more and more jobs can be automated, the competition for the other jobs that are left will increase. I hate to sound like a pessimist, but even in those fields that are safe for the time being, I believe the automation within those fields will reduce the need for human intervention. Hopefully those careers you mentioned will continue to be safe for a long time. I was thinking, there does seem to be some what of a return to spending more time with people face to face, and it seems like we’ll always want to socialize. So, I think some powerful technologies in the future could be ones that enhance our time with friends. Something like how laser tag must have felt when it first came out. It’s integrating tech into a game that already existed. I could see things like people playing augmented reality mini golf or ping pong with their friends in their own backyards. It seems like some bank will be made in things like that in the future.

Software engineering and related roles are going to do great. One field I'd avoid is mechanical engineering; it was dying back in 2010; and will now die faster due to electric vehicles having fewer parts. We will still need mechanical engineers but the supply side is way too high at the moment.
