3:05 i think it works by updating the leaves because the observers detect block updates infront of them, and the leaves that are connected to a tree don't de-spawn but if you cut all the wood in a tree the leaves break over time and disappear, so the leaves have two forms de-spawn and no de-spawn when a log touches the leaves they update and become no de-spawn leaves but when the log moves away the leaves become de-spawn leaves. but since these are player placed leaves they don't de-spawn either way i think.

Quick tips

1: redstone repeaters when faced into a block will turn that block in a redstone block not litteraly but will put on everything that touches it

2: redstone can travel up on glass
