Once I realized masking was just the tracks all mixing themselves for me just by existing I completely stopped caring about carving spaces. Only exception is when super obvious buildup happens. You give good advice man I wish I got it years ago when I was a lot younger lol

recently i found that mixing metal like riddim/tearout helps alot too for making things stand out, i've been not eqing everything but either masking or ringmod sidechaining (dope video!)

Complimentary EQ has its place. There are no hard and fast rules. Besides, I usually get my "glue" from tape saturation and 2 bus compression. But yeah, as long as everything is tracked and balanced well, a little masking isn't a bad thing. But most newer mixers tend to mix super dark and muddy. That's why high passing and complimentary EQ is so helpful to beginners. As with most things in music production, the MOST important thing is tracking well. Professional producers take care of so much EQing just by tracking things in proper frequency ranges and with proper tone.

I want to learn, but I literally cant hear the difference in the mix. Ive been at it for years, but I feel like I havent even developed the right ear to pick up stuff like this and its beyond frustrating.

I always thought that the bass from the guitars doesnt mess with the bass from the kick and the bass guitar cause the guitars are in stereo and the kick and bass guitar are mono
