In Part 1 (of 2), Alex and Dr. Ryan Bisel answer the question What are Ethics vs Morals, give a definition, look at similarities and differences (i.e., ethics vs morals), and give an explanation of why these terms matter today for both individuals and societies.

This video takes a practical look at these terms. A quick definition of both ethics and morals are widely held standards for right conduct. Lots of overlap exists between the terms ethics and morals. In most of the social sciences, researchers use these terms interchangeably. Still, we tend to hear the words "ethics" and "ethical" used more frequently in professional, formal, and other public contents and the words "morals" or "morality" to describe more private, personal, or otherwise less formal contexts.

I'm in the military and we are constantly trying to teach the Army Values. It's so difficult with the military being a reflection of society. Look at our society today. It can get frustrating.

Many years ago, I heard a speech by Chuck Colson called "Why Harvard can't teach ethics." Here's version of what he said:
"In an era of relativism, nobody can teach ethics. The term derives from the Greek word ethos, which literally means a stable, hiding place, or cave—something absolute and unchanging. Morals, on the other hand, derives from mores, which are always changing as times change. We need to concern ourselves with ethics—the absolute truths of life, the rights and wrongs of human behavior, the codes we live by—instead of simply with morals, which are constantly changing. Ethics are what ought to be. Morals are what is..."
Hope that you find it to be useful.

We say that we have a "Code of Ethics" but we don't say we have a "Code of Morals" because ethics are largely deontological, while morals are largely consequentialist.

Ethics are a based a consensus, that are influenced by community and authority figure and religion. Morals are not some that has any outside influences. They are personal and are intuitive. Values are taught by caregiver or family.
