Identical twins don’t run in families, they’re basically a random anomaly in which the fertilized eggs splits. Fraternal twins, however, can run in families, because some women’s bodies are biologically more likely to produce eggs from both ovaries in one cycle. What does this information do for the asker? Probably nothing. I think it’s just one of those polite small-talky things people ask when you’re expecting!

I feel like most people ask if twins run in the family if they’re actually curious about whether or not you used fertility treatments but they realize that’s a rude thing to ask. 😂 Our twins are mono-di too! You’ll get lots of extra ultrasounds! And yes - only fraternal twins run in families and only in the mother’s family because some women hyperovulate - release more than one egg a month. Y’all just won the baby lottery. God chose you for this special mission. Blessings to you! ❤️❤️

People who already have a history of twins in their families are more likely to conceive twins, supposedly. So, I guess the person asking this REALLY wants to know is your’s and Beth’s happy news more a “lightening in a bottle” thing, or “not really all that surprising”. Totally guessing here, but I THINK that’s what they’re digging for.
