The Curse is a darkly comic satire that thrives on causing discomfort and cringe. I loved it!

For decades women were depicted as overdependent and lacking a sense of self. Now women are inverting that narrative. The woman is now the one with the inflated sense of self and the man the one who props her up. A narcissist can't exist without a sidekick. Someone to mirror their gradiosity back to them. Asher is the perfect mirror for Whitney - which is disturbing for Whitney because she doesn't actually want to see herself. And she performs the same meanings (or absence) for him. They are narcissus and echo, but with a modern gender representation. They are both equally sick, but for opposite reasons. She is in complete denial of her shame, and he acts his out. In a sense, she can't feel bad about herself, and he can't feel good about himself. Yikes. It's also true that when he "disappears" (even though he already felt invisible) he is replaced, in Whitney's eyes, by the baby. Now she has another innocent human to worship her. They were always looking "through" each other to meet their own needs, rather than see each other (or themselves). As humans, we evolved to be in love (bond), however, we adapt at an early age to whatever distorted version of love we are raised in. We are likely to recreate those same dynamics in adulthood because it feels (emphasis on emotion) familiar. These two were made for each in their respective, messed up, family crucible.

Quality review. Great insights. Agree with your thoughts on the ending, excluding inferred connections of rebirth - i think it’s enough that both characters are “released”
