A fisherman is recovering after being critically injured in a boating accident on Old Hickory Lake Sunday. Investigators say the motor on Cody Liddle's boat hit something in the water, tearing the motor off his boat and flipping it into the cockpit where it landed on him.

Tell me speed didn't play a major factor! These tournaments become dangerous when angler have time limits and race to get to the hot spots for fish, this is becoming increasingly common and many fishermen are getting injured and killed because of it! No fish contest is worth get hurt or killed for. Fishing should be about enjoying the beautiful outdoors and what nature has to offer as well as not being in a hurry so you can relax and have fun.

Or you could not drive around the lake at 700 mph?🤦‍♂️

When did this start to happen? Boating all my life and never heard of such a thing, seen lots of motors kick up like they were designed to but never flip into the boat! Maybe too much motor for too little boat?

I've been boating all my life and the only time I've seen a motor flip up is when a smaller motor that's not properly secured or locked down hits a stump or something floating in the river. The momentum of the motor swinging back and up can flip it into the boat, but more often then not it just flips up, and falls into the water. To launch a big motor up and into the boat you have to be flying. Most tilt/trim units have a break away point where they will give way so they don't rip the transom off the boat.
I was always taught that every outboard needs a chain that holds it down on the transom, both to save it from falling in the water if it came loose and to keep it out of the boat. Its as simple as a chain from the transom to the motor bracket that's too short to let it rise up and come off the boat high enough to come in the boat. Simple cheap insurance.
If the motor breaks off the bracket on a strike, there's likely issues with the motor design and the speed the boat was traveling at.

Forged Steel? On an outboard motor frame? IDTS

This looks like a very crucial piece of safety gear every outboard powered boat should have if the engine is of much size at all!

It can happen to even the smallest of watercraft and doesn’t need much speed.
A man and his grandson were working on a shrimp net out near the coast. Needing a tool from their camp, the youngster jumped into their jonboat and left to go get it. After hours, the worried grandfather finally was able to flag someone down and get a ride back to the camp. They found the grandson dead in the boat, the lad was pulling up to the dock and hit some submerged pilings, the water level was lower than normal and the approach he used led to the motor being kicked up into the boat and striking him in the head.

Its not a motor problem, its a boater problem. Most likely hes was running wide open otherwise the engine would have done a big thump and a hicup and not thrown up and forward into the boat.

Horsepower and common sense are inversely proportion.

They should be mandatory equipment supplied on all boats.

Forged steel is the weakest point? This is as easy as a lawsuit gets. Also needed to mention the speed that the boater was traveling.
