Way to go, this technique is a spot on modification for modifying nordic walking technique for older adults or anyone in search of more balance, stability and confidence when walking. Our York Nordic walking poles are most often purchased by those suffering from neurological conditions like Parkinson's or those recovering from joint replacement. Having your forearms at 90 degrees and planting the poles a few inches behind or even in front of your feet (individual preference based on ailments/need). Sometimes having the pole straight down and in front of your foot and perpendicular to the ground works if you have major balance concerns. If you have back issues or spinal stenosis, you can even try making the poles a bit higher than shown in this video and pretend you are pinching a newspaper under your arm not wanting it to fall out. You won't extend your arms as much but this pole position and technique will relieve the pressure on your back. take your poles on your next trip to see your physical therapist and they'll help you find a technique that works for you. What is most important is that you are feeling more confident and motivated to keep moving. Oh, and sometimes a double pole plant in front is helpful if you are stepping up or down on a curb... lots of ways to use the poles. If you have arthritic hands or if you are a man with large hands you might even want to consider a black foam trekking style grip. I know the nordic walking purists are cringing right now but i'm a huge believer in using products and techniques that work for you. Now get out there and enjoy walking with poles! Happy walking, Lauren.

The ppl complaining this is not correct -- this video is for OLDER ppl in a senior community, and it's an intro video. It's not intended for the 30 year old trying to build the core and triceps. Read the his explanation before tearing him down!

Got some fractures and a long way from revalidation. Used this technique since this weekend to improve speed and distance. For me, this is the beginning of a new era and will be more dedicated to nordic walking instead of cycling.

I have arthritis in my thumbs. I have found it painful to hold the poles because of the straps on top of my joints. Is there a way to get extra support for my hands? Would that be advisable for someone like me? Thank you for the very clear video.

Not the correct technique, since you don't involve the triceps in the upper motion.
