How Did the Nicene Creed Form? This famous statement of Christian orthodoxy is recited all over the world today. But it was actually composed in the 4th century during a theological controversy. What was this controversy? And what can it tell us about early Christianity?

Always thought the Jesus part of the creed was overkill when I read it in church as a kid. Now I know why.

The term "Son of" denotes equality with the father for first century Jews. Men did not get to be called "Son of" until they reached the age of 30. Before that they were considered "Child of " or still beholding to the will of their father. They could be married and have children but still had to wait for that special birthday to be independent.

The reason the new testament is composed the way that it is ...is simply that those were the books that resonated with the most believers over the longest period of time....in other words; when you look at the New testament...basically what you are looking at is a greatest hits

You seem to forget that Paul`s writings were circulating among the greek colonies 200 years before the Council of Nicene even took place. You also forget to mention that those bishops that were invited by Constantine the Great were not some lazy big-bellied priests, but were a crowd of martyrs that came with the few limbs they had left after decades of persecution by the roman empire (until 313 AD, as we all know). Don`t you think it was the normal procedure to make in order to defend the orthodoxy (in its etymological sense) they suffered and many of them died for in front of the gnostic influences and other theological escapades?

The most disguating aspect about the creeds imo is that those who dont emphatically accept the entire creed then or now are branded as heretics and not real Christians even if they believe and teach out of the Bible and pray to God and belueve Jesus to be their savior.
