Planting A Whole Garlic Bulb Intact? Yeah....don't. That's not how Garlic is grown. At least, not if you want to obtain more Garlic bulbs the following year!

In this latest Garden Quickie, let's discuss why sprouting or planting whole Garlic bulbs is really only for show and a few green stems, rather than producing anything significant. I took one for the team and planted a few whole bulbs last year, lets check on them and see what they are up to!

2022 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

Very amusing. Am pleased to say that I followed your "how to grow garlic" video last year and am hoping for a good crop in the summer 🤞

I grow mostly flowers in containers but also a few onions and garlic. I'm glad I live in a climate that enables planting in October-November and harvesting in Feb-March. I've been doing it one clove at a time but this was fun and informative and I didn't waste container space to do the research myself. Thanks :)

Bravo. I always smh at those goofy videos that show the entire bulb being sprouted. It’s great you did this so new growers don’t lose a year and their desire to grow.

Love the garden quickies, too. Can you do a video on your green house? I am considering having one in our garden but do not know much about sizing and lighting and heating and all that fun stuff. Thanks.

This happened to me inadvertently. Last spring, the garlic I'd planted properly in the fall of 2021 was coming up nicely when the whole garden was wrecked by a tree falling on it in a colossal wind storm. The garlic plants were obliterated, but the bulbs were still there, under the surface. This year, they're coming up again, and I can tell that there are a bunch of plants forming from all the clumped together cloves in each bulb. I guess I might as well dig them up and use the space for something else. Fortunately, I planted a fresh batch of garlic in another part of the garden, and it's all growing nicely this spring.

Canadian, eh? Me too. I'm in Toronto GTA which is Zone 6a I'm told. What about you? Where in this magnificent country are you planting in? Love you show, love your content, man!

Oh they look like spring onions! Have you tried using them in salads like this? Was the flavour just as powerful at the base as a garlic clove, or was it milder?

Haha! I saw that video you showed. Just as an experiment, I started my whole garlic bulb in water to root them, but I separated the bulbs to plant them. So far they are doing great, so I hope they will bulb out for me.

Very interesting. They look like scallions. Do the little bulbs have any flavor? I guess very minimal. Thanks. Question: I planted garlic in the fall. It's starting to show itself now. When will it be ready to harvest? Have a good one.

So I did the tik tok method, but after watching your video decided to dig up the bulb that had small spouts sprouting. I carefully washed the dirt off the roots and tried my best to separate the cloves without damaging the roots too much. I think I did a pretty good job and was careful transplanting individually 4”s apart. I hope this video saved my efforts and I’ll have a bunch of garlic soon. If it survives the late planting time that is…😂

Talked with you about it last year after watching your vid. Planted in late October-unfortunately we still used AC into early December here. [[I hate hot weather]] My first plantings had already sprouted shoots and stalk by mid-December. We finally got some freezing or cold wether sso I pulled some of it-just green onion looking Garlic, no bulbs. Replanted between freezes. Seeing shoots but am waiting till early Summer like you suggest to see how it went.

But the greens, Jeff, the greens!!! Just kidding. I usually plant that inner paet of tiny garlic pods (the ones that are a pain to peel) and use those for greens.

Garlic greens are tasty. They taste like leeks but better.

Wow, I didn't know it took so long to grow garlic. Can they be planted any time of the year?
