Main reason is because one of the main magic builds uses a big laser to oneshot everything but it's definitely a lot of fun and you don't NEED to use the laser

Mages have been hated for as long as I can remember but people complain about anything they don't like. It's my 3rd favorite next to pyromancy. The playstyle I like isn't practicle in any way because it's a weapon summoning. Dark Souls 3 was where I enjoyed it the most

People are always gonna complain about your build in souls games so if you wanna use a mage build knock yourself out or if you want to give bleed builds another chance you can try reduvia, or if you want a str build you could try iron balls or star fists, mage build you can try carian slicer, night comet, comet azur, faith build's you could use lightning spear, catch flame, pest threads, You got a lot of options in elden ring any random junk you pick up can become the best weapon in the game if you build it right

First: toxic Souls Fans hate on anything. Forget about it and do whatever.

Second: in both Demon Souls and Dark Souls (15 years ago) magic was planned as a support action. The game was designed in such a way that you would inevitably need a melee weapon. However People learned really quickly that if you focus on Damage and learned how to pick fights you could focus on a very strict "Magic Only" Build and the game could not deal with that making ALL fights super easy. It was still a challenge because of you mismanage your flasks or mp or itens you are out of options.

Regardless, the play style was frowned upon by elitists that suffered like masochists playing melee only builds and the Hate endures to this day.

Magic build is super fun, it doesn't need to be a "Magic Only" build. I encourage anyone to try and see how the build behaves and see for themselves how different the game can be.

Third: Elden Ring is not like other Souls Games. The developers accounted for pretty much anything and the things they forgot is being patched non stop since the game launched. That is to say, the game has points where they test specific builds to make sure you can play the game to progress. You have bosses and enemies super resistente to magic, you have other that dodge magic, you have some that deflect magic the game is out to get you and you need to learn the game in a different way in order to progress.
It's not going to be easy.

Fourth: while it's not super easy, it is easier that most melee builds. And taking into consideration there is nothing stopping you from having a Melee build with a glass canon Mage stats, you will have a tool for every scenario and that's really powerful.

Who cares what people think. For every mage, there's some guy cosplaying Guts. Build Vigor early, then focus on INT and MND, sprinkling END in there so you can wear armor.

As someone who beat this as a mage first, it's hard without a ton of armor, but the damage payoff late game is fun and thr spells make you feel like an actual mage.

Me and my girl started playing together she’s a mage and her game looks like it’s on easy mode you chunk and still get knock downs as a mage
