Open your formal letter:
Dear Sir/Madam - if you don't know the name of the person you're writing to.
Dear Mr Smith - if the person you're writing to is a man and you know his name.
Dear Ms Smith - it the person you're writing to is a woman and you know her name, but you don't know if she's married or not.

Depending on the purpose of your letter, start it with one of these standard expressions:
- I am writing in connection with...
- I am writing to inform you that...
- I am writing to find out about...
- I am writing to enquire about...
- I wish to make a complaint about...
- I was very sorry to hear that..
- I am delighted to inform you that...
- I regret to inform you that...

Close your formal letter:
- I look forward to hearing from you,
- I look forward to your response,
- I hope to hear from you soon on this matter,
- Thank you kindly in advance,

Yours faithfully, - if you don't know the name of the recipient
Yours sincerely, - if you know the name of the recipient

Finally, write you first name and your surname.
