Possibly the greatest thing about mirrorless cameras is the ability to punch in and focus whilst looking though the viewfinder. I recently bought a Nikon Z7 and using my lovely Zeiss primes, focusing is so quick and easy.

I believe that you’re correct Chris, for many years none of my film cameras had auto focus, everything was manual (split image), my first camera with auto focus was the Fuji X-T2 (and now the X-T4), I shoot probably 99% in auto focus but I have the manual focus assist with focus peaking (in red) and it’s a hit or miss, very frustrating, I thought that it was me not paying attention to what I was doing, but now that you mention it I’m going to try one of the other settings (or options). As always, be well and stay safe.

I have a Canon EOS-M and a TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 manual focus lens. This is my travel kit. The manual focus on the screen is pretty good. It took some practice but I get good results.

This method works fine with a tripod, but how do you focus these cameras precisely handheld? If you zoom, you cannot see the outer edges of the frame to compose your shot. I agree, focus peaking is not very accurate, and on a DSLR like my D850, I find that the focus confirmation dot works fine and is very accurate for manual focus. But on a mirrorless it can be a different story; I tried some Leica R-series lenses on a Nikon Z 5 with Novoflex adapter, and that camera did not produce the focus dot as it would with a native Nikkor lens. The focus peaking wasn't much help. On a tripod, no problem, but handheld, it was difficult with focus peaking and without the focus dot.
