Figuring out the components of the force due to gravity that are parallel and perpendicular to the surface of an inclined plane. Created by Sal Khan.

Physics on Khan Academy: Physics is the study of the basic principles that govern the physical world around us. We'll start by looking at motion itself. Then, we'll learn about forces, momentum, energy, and other concepts in lots of different physical situations. To get the most out of physics, you'll need a solid understanding of algebra and a basic understanding of trigonometry.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Easy trick I learned from my physics teacher on when to use sine or cosine. It works every single time and you don't have to remember sohcahtoa or which side is the "x" or "y" values:

Is the line that you want to find the value of touching the angle theta? Use cosine.

Is the line that you want to find the value of NOT touching the angle theta? Use sine.

Touching angle = cosine
Not touching angle = sine

A lifesaver when you teacher just doesn't explain it thoroughly enough for you to completely understand.

I just wish my physics teacher would teach us the intuition behind the mechanics we learn rather than just memorizing formulas ! Thanks Sal :)

even after all this, this is way over my fucking head

this whole force competent is way too confusing... and I have an exam tomorrow

physics used to be my biggest enemy in high school. and now i'm about to study engineering in university. wish me luck😂😂😂😂

Update : i changed my major in 2018😂😂😂😂😂😂

seems so easy when he does it...however, when my teacher explains it seems like Chinese alphabet.

It's funny cause I'm watching this for the second time. Last year I watched this for Physics, now I'm watching this for vectors. It's interesting how two different subjects can overlap each other.

wooow. I was lost about this subject. I mean, I know that the angle of the inclination is going to be equal to that in the center but I don't know why.. ive been seeing it in other videos but they just skip it and wont explain how they were able to conclude that. And, you did! thank you so much! its so much clearer now!

Best teachers start from the basics and explain it all. It helps out those who don't immediately get everything or who don't have as great a base as you do.

Thanks for this, I've watched these videos for stats, probability, vectors, some chem, and now this. It's a lifesaver in school.

Thanks! Even after completing whole two chapters based on this concept, I was wondering where the theta b/w resultant came from. Finally, I understand it now.

I love the way the video goes into all the details. That way all people can understand it! Thanks a lot Sal!!

Sal, thanks for the refresh on this! I love studying this kind of stuff, and your videos help me memorize all the crazy math involved.

Inclined plane problems absolutely ruined me in college. Even the TA's couldn't help me make sense of it (they tried!). But now the fog is beginning to clear!

The intuitive part really helped.
Thanks.
