I've learned that if you "lay down" force to the angle (close the angle) that's when it's cos and when you "stand up" force (to 90 degrees) it's sin. It was easy for me to remember this that way :)

I appreciate the clarification. Before taking my exam, our instructor posted some example problems for us to do. In the multiple choice two of the answers was dependent upon whether you used cosine or sine, so this is very important that a person gets this right.

These are awesome explanations. They really solidify concepts that aren't always intuitive.

Thank you so much! You explain this topic so eloquently! The idea of taking the limit as sine theta and cosine theta go to zero is really helpful.

Actually all these years i simply put theta wherever i like it and most of the time that was right. This is the first time someone taught me how to guess it and make it correct.THANK YOU

Thank you for engaging my utmost attention and for producing this work. You've enlightened me in numerous ways and foremost is probably the part about taking the limit of theta. I can now see were one to stand a wet wooden beam measuring, 16ft x 4in x 4in, on its end and then lean it slightly against a wall and the using your setup I can calculate how much force is pushing against this wall.
Correct me if I'm wrong please. If I perform a press handstand and walk up a wall using the wall to support my balance, it's evident to me much of the mg will be passing through my fingers but a percentage of my body's mg will be transferred to the wall. If theta is close to zero then a good 99% of the total mg is going go through my hands to the ground.

I've never had pointed out to me the idea of reducing the subject under analysis to a dot. Brilliant.
